Here is a short guide to the gemstones associated with each month of the year. This is the modern list but traditional and zodiac gemstones are also included to give alternative choices.

JANUARY - GARNET
Through the centuries Garnet has symbolized many things including fire, faith, truth, grace and fidelity. It is attributed with the power of protecting you from nightmares and snakebites. It's also supposed to provide you guidance in the dark. Tradition connects the stone with blood.

FEBRUARY - AMETHYST
According to Greek legend, Bacchus, the god of wine, created the Amethyst. Therefore, anyone wearing it could not become intoxicated. Its purple shade is linked to royalty.

MARCH - AQUAMARINE
The attributes of aquamarine are good health, love & affection, youthfulness and purity. Ancient Greeks believed it held the spirit of the sea and many sailors today still believe it will protect them.

Diamonds are traditionally linked to love because both endure forever. So, naturally, the qualities attributed to the stone are love, eternity and strength.

Emeralds are supposed to heal a variety of illnesses and give good health to the wearer. It is believed that they enable the wearer to predict future events. Gem quality Emeralds are so rare that they are considered more valuable than Diamonds.

JUNE - PEARL
The rich white lustre of the Pearl symbolizes a pure heart. It is associated with the virtues of chastity and modesty and is believed to have a strong influence in creating stable marriages.

JULY - RUBY
Rubies are believed to induce harmony in the life of the wearer, so you can expect a peaceful, healthy life with this stone. They are also believed to give protection.

Peridot is believed to protect the wearer from evil, particularly the forces of darkness. It is also said to stimulate the healing power of medicines.

The Persians believed that the Earth rested on an enormous Sapphire and that the sky reflected its colour. It is attributed with enhancing the qualities of faith and purity in the wearer. A common belief being that the brighter the glitter of the stone, the stronger the virtues. It is also supposed to give the wearer foresight.

OCTOBER - OPAL
Opals are said to be stones of hope, associated with the virtues of innocence and purity. They are believed to have the power to stimulate healing, friendship and emotion. Fire Opals are said to stimulate passion.

NOVEMBER - TOPAZ
Ancient Greeks referred to it as the "Stone of Strength". During the Middle Ages the Topaz was thought to heal physical and mental disorders. There is a belief that it can make the wearer invisible when in danger.

DECEMBER - TURQUISE
Turquoise is associated with good fortune, good luck and, naturally, a happy life.
