Well we have had the Olympics , the competition ,sponsorships ,world and Olympic records

The souvenirs  and sadly the cheats......nowadays all to many of the latter.

The royal mint has produced a series of coins depicting a number sports ......these will remain, the coins that is , in our pockets ,piggy banks and tills for years to come......unlike some of the other

how shall I tactfully put it...no there is not such a way...tat produced to "commemorate" there games

Which were heroically brought to us " under budget ""

Ok now down to basics I am based in Hertfordshire and have found it over time relatively easy to

Obtain mint bags of the following sports :

Athletics

Gymnastics

Show jumping

Canoeing

Rowing

Goal ball ( I still have no idea what that is)

Archery

Hockey

Badminton

Fencing

It is my contention that the Royal Mint has released different designs round the UK.

I HAVE FOUND IT PARTICULARILY DIFFICULT EVEN IN CHANGE to find the following:

Basketball

Boccia

Cycling

Handball

Shooting

Taekwondo

Triathlon

Weightlifting

Wheel chair rugby

The other sports have had a mixed availability.

NOW THAT BOTHOLYMPICS ARE DONE AND DUSTED I HAVE NOTICED THAT MIXED BAGS OF COINS HAVE FOUND THERE WAY INTO CIRCULATION AS IT SEEMS THE

MINT IS EMPTYING IT'S STOCKS .

The Royal Mint clearly used the Post Office network as its primary way of getting these coins(indeed any coin) into general circulation. This can be deduced from my experience that of all the hundreds of £10 bags of coin I have sifted thru. Not one containing 100% Olympic mint coins that I have has come from any other high street source.

ONTO MINTAGE FIGURES I HAVE BROKEN DOWN THE SPORTS BY THEIR REPORTED

MINTAGE FIGURES NAMELY:

Group one: aquatics,archery,athletics,basketball,boccia,canoeing,equestrian,fencing,Goalball,gymnastics,handball

Hockey,judo,rowing,shooting,table tennis,taekwondo,triathlon,volleyball,weightlifting.

Group two:boxing,cycling,pentathlon,tennis,football,wheelchair rugby,wrestling

Mintage figures of 1 million or more observed for group one.

Mintage figures of 800k for boxing and cycling,700k for pentathlon,600k,shooting

And 500k football, wheel chair and rugby.

Theoretically those with the lowest mintage should command the higher valuation

But it is not quite that simple....I suspect that those sports that gold medals won by British

Competitors will also feature in boosting value...more of this next time

Meanwhile I would welcome your comments ,especially on what u have found were readily

What I am going to hopefully, provide ....with your help fellow numisMATISTS IS THE UNFOLDING story of these quite unique coins......

I would like everyone's help to start with :  I am sure the royal mint have distributed theses coins

To different parts of the uk.for example living as I do within the M25. I can say, imagining the area within the M25 to be a clock face ,that between 10:00 and11:00 hrs the mint certainly released a number namely: a) gymnastics b) goal ball c) rowing and hockey.

Can you help  by saying what bulk bags of coin you got where and when would be useful.

Right that's set the ball rolling how to contact me well I buy/sell a few items on eBay a month

Using the name rees2006 so that seems to be a good start.
