F.A.Q's

We have created this page to provide you with answers to common ABS Reluctor Ring technical questions we are asked.

Q. How do I know if there is a problem with the ABS Reluctor Ring on my car and if I need an ABS Reluctor Ring?

A. We have created a checklist below to provide some information on common symptoms of an ABS Reluctor Ring failure:

1) ABS Light sometimes may be displayed or flash on dashboard display.

2) Knocking / Banging noise is generally heard when the brakes are applied at slow speeds (feels as if brakes are failing).

3) Brake Pedal fluctuation is generally experienced (feels similar to brake judder).

PLEASE NOTE:- It is important to check the condition of the ABS Reluctor Ring. Any signs of heavy corrosion or cracking indicate an ABS Reluctor Ring failure.

Q. Why have my original ABS Reluctor Rings corroded?

A. Again, most original ABS Reluctor Rings were manufactured from poor quality material and had zero corrosion protection applied when manufactured. Nearly all replacement ABS Reluctor Rings sold today are much the same.
All pd ABS Reluctor Rings are manufactured with much higher specification material in Germany and combined with our UNIQUE 'PRO-COAT V3' Corrosion Protection ensures they will last the life of the car. This is why UK Parts Direct offer a 10 Year Guarantee....

Q. The original ABS Reluctor Rings on my car have corroded. How long will your new rings last?

A. pd ABS Reluctor Rings will last the remaining life of the car. We offer a 10 Year Guarantee.

Q. How can you offer a 10 Year Guarantee on your ABS Reluctor Rings?

A. We offer a 10 Year Guarantee due to our Revolutionary 'PRO-COAT V3' Anti-Corrosion Treatment. A unique process developed and only used by UK Parts Direct. Numerous tests have proved how effective this coating is, WITHSTANDING OVER 100 HOURS OF INTENSE SALT SPRAY TESTS.

Q. Why should I buy a pd ABS Reluctor Ring?

A. Most original ABS Reluctor Rings were manufactured from poor quality material and had zero corrosion protection applied when manufactured.
That is why UK Parts Direct offer a 10 Year Guarantee....
Most garages now will only deal with pd ABS Reluctor Rings due to the toxicity of many other ABS Reluctor Rings on the market.

Q. Where are pd ABS Reluctor Rings manufactured?

A. All of pd ABS Reluctor Rings are manufactured in Germany using the very best quality material available.

Q. What's wrong with cheap ABS Reluctor Rings produced in the Far East?

A. ABS Reluctor Rings produced in the Far East we have tested, use very poor quality materials and have poor corrosion resistance, if any.

Q. How can I tell if the ABS Reluctor Ring is produced in the Far East?

A. ABS Reluctor Rings produced in the Far East are generally cheaper and will corrode very quickly (needing replacement).

Q. I have heard some ABS Reluctor Rings can be hazardous to fit?

A. All of our ABS Rings are manufactured with your health in mind. We are aware of numerous companies now selling ABS Rings with HAZARDOUS Coatings!! Most garages are now aware of this fact and specifically ask for only pd ABS Reluctor Rings.

Q. How can I tell if the ABS Ring I am fitting is hazardous?

A. It is not always very easy to identify whether the ABS Ring you are fitting is hazardous. If the ABS Ring is a SILVER OR BLUE colour, and produced in Europe, it may be non-hazardous. If the ring is a GOLD colour, this will be certainly be hazardous. When the hazardous rings are heated, they will emit toxic fumes that are known cancer causing agents.
These hazardous finishes are prohibited in Europe for automotive applications under the End of Life Vehicle Directive (EOLVD).
Most replacement ABS Rings are produced in the Far East and we will not entertain testing the consequences of breathing the fumes they emit (obviously)!!

Q. How can I avoid hazardous ABS Rings?

A. All pd ABS Rings are non hazardous and meet all EC Directives, giving you peace of mind when fitting...
Our revolutionary  'PRO-COAT V3' corrosion treatment meets all necessary legislation as well as being the most environmentally friendly on the market today.

Q. I have seen some Window Style ABS Reluctor Rings with round holes and not squares. Why is this?

A. This is a cheap method some companies use for production. All pd ABS Rings are IDENTICAL dimensionally to the Original Equipment to ensure consistent readings from the ABS Sensor.

Q. All the Window Style ABS Reluctor Rings I have seen are welded. Do you weld yours?

A. NEVER... This is a VERY BAD way of producing ABS Reluctor Rings. Welding will allow water ingress in the future which will cause the ring to snap. All pd ABS Rings are produced from one piece of metal to avoid this happening!!

Q. How does an ABS Speed Sensor Ring (ABS Reluctor Ring) work?

A. This does depend on the type of ABS Reluctor Ring. There are two different types of ABS Reluctor Ring - Passive ABS Reluctor Ring (Metal Toothed Type) and Active ABS Reluctor Ring (Magnetic Type Ring). UK Parts Direct stock the largest range of both Passive and Active ABS Sensor Rings.

Q. What is the difference between an ABS Speed Sensor Ring and ABS Reluctor Ring?

A. Nothing at all - just a name

Q. How does a Passive ABS Reluctor Ring work?

A. Passive ABS Reluctor Rings work with Passive ABS Sensors. These are made up of a permanent magnet around which a copper wire coil is wound. This sensor is mounting in close proximity to the Passive ABS Reluctor Ring. As the ABS Reluctor Ring rotates, the teeth create a small inductive voltage in the copper windings. This voltage signal is monitored by the vehicle ECU (vehicle's computer) and used as wheel speed information.

Q. How does an Active ABS Reluctor Ring work?

A. Active ABS Reluctor Rings work with Active ABS Sensors. Active ABS Sensors can be likened to the Hall Type Sensor (used in tachometers).
The sensor is mounted in close proximity to the Active (Magnetic) ABS Reluctor Ring. The Active (Magnetic) type ABS Ring consists of a multi-pole (north / south / north / south …) magnetic ring. More and more vehicles are now being produced with integral ABS within the wheel bearing seal and use magnetic powder instead of fixed magnets.
The rotating, alternating, magnetic poles produce a magnetic flux within the sensor element which then amplifies and controls the signal for the ECU (vehicle's computer) to use as wheel speed information. The output of an Active sensor is digital with a square wave signal, being capable of sending wheel speed information down to 0mph. In contrast, the Passive sensor’s accuracy is usually dubious below 20mph.

Q. What is the difference between an Active ABS Reluctor Ring and a Magnetic ABS Reluctor Ring?

A. Nothing at all - just a name

Q. How hard are pd ABS Reluctor Rings to fit to my car?

A. pd ABS Reluctor Rings are very easy to fit. All pd rings have perfect tolerances to ensure easy fitting.

Q. How long should it take to fit pd ABS Reluctor Rings to my car?

A. It should take around one hour per ABS Reluctor Ring for a competent mechanic.

Q. How much should it cost to fit pd ABS Reluctor Rings to my car if I take to a garage for fitting?

A. As a rough guide, most garages charge around one hours labour per ABS Reluctor Ring.

Q. How are pd ABS Reluctor Rings fitted?

A. We have full fitting instructions on our website.
