SO, YOUR ARISTON MARGHERITA 1635, WASHING MACHINE, HAS BEEN RUNNING NOISILY, AND FINALLY SOUNDS LIKE A BUCKET OF NAILS,  WHAT DO YOU DO NOW,  GO OUT AND BY A NEW MACHINE?  OR CALL OUT AN ENGINEER? BEFORE YOU DO THIS,  IF YOU ARE A HANDY PERSON WITH A FEW TOOLS AND INTERESTED IN HAVING A GO,  BY ALL MEANS HAVE A GO, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE, IF YOU FAIL YOU HAVE LOST THE PRICE OF THE BEARINGS,  AND GAINED A LOT OF EXPERIENCE,  AND HOPEFULLY HAD SOME FUN TRYING,  BUT YOU CAN DO IT,  I HAVE JUST SUCCESSFULLY DONE IT WITH NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE,  I WAS SEARCHING FOR AN EXPLICIT GUIDE AND COULD NOT FIND ONE ON THE NET,  HENCE THIS GUIDE,   FIRST OF ALL OPEN THE DOOR AND LIFT THE INTERNAL DRUM UP AND DOWN,   IF THERE IS A LOT OF MOVEMENT,  THATS THE MAIN BEARINGS FAILED,

FIRST, UNPLUG THE MACHINE,  IF THERE ARE CHILDREN ABOUT, TAKE THE FUSE OUT OF THE PLUG AND REPLACE THE TOP,

TURN OFF THE WATER AT THE WASHING MACHINE TAPS, USUALLY BLUE AND RED, UNDO THE NUTS AND TAKE THEM OFF,

REMOVE THE OUTLET PIPE, AND DRAIN IT INTO A SHALLOW BOWL OR SIMILAR,

THEN MOVE THE MACHINE TO A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN MOVE IT AROUND,  I USED THE NEXT ROOM, PUT THE MACHINE ON SOME POLYTHENE IN CASE OF DRIPS,

WITH THE MACHINE UPRIGHT, REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS AT THE BACK OF THE TOP PANEL, SLIDE TH PANEL BACK TO UNLOCK LIFT IT OFF AND REPLACE THE SCREWS SO YOU DON'T LOOSE THEM,

REMOVE THE SCREWS IN THE BACK PANEL, AND PUT THE PANEL TO ONE SIDE,  HAVE A LITTLE BOX OR DISH READY TO PUT IN ANY NUTS OR SCREWS,

LOOKING THROUGH THE BACK YOU WILL SEE A CAST IRON CROSS, ALSO KNOW AS A SPIDER,  YOU ARE GOING TO REMOVE THIS,  IT IS HELD IN PLACE BY, 8 NUTS, AND YOU WILL NEED A SOCKET SET OR RATCHET FITTED WITH A T40 TOOL YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU NEED BY LOOKING AT THE NUTS,

BEFORE YOU ATTACK THIS,  YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE ALUMINIUM DRIVE WHEEL AT THE BACK OF THE DRUM, THERE IS ONE LARGE NUT IN THE CENTER,  SAME AGAIN A T40 TYPE,  AND THIS IS WHERE YOU BEGIN THE OPERATION,  REMOVE THE NUT,  IT WILL BE VERY TIGHT, WEAR A PAIR OF INDUSTRIAL LEATHER GLOVES FROM HERE ON SO SAVE SKINNING YOUR KNUCKLES,  WHEN YOU TRY TO TURN THE NUT THE WHOLE THING TURNS,  SO, JAMB A PIECE OF 2"X 2" WOOD OR A RUBBER HAMMER HANDLE WHATEVER YOU HAVE, BETWEEN THE SPOKES AND THE SPIDER ARM,  NOW APPLY ALL THE PRESSURE YOU NEED TO RELEASE THE NUT,  KEEP PUSHING HARDER AND HARDER UNTILL IT RELEASES, THEN REMOVE IT, AND PUT IT IN YOUR LITTLE BOX,

REMOVE THE DRIVE BELT, JUST PULL IT TOWARDS YOU AND ROTATE SLOWLY,

NEXT YOU WANT TO REMOVE THE ALUMINIUM DRIVE WHEEL, AND THIS WILL BE STUCK TIGHT,  THE EASIEST WAY TO GET IT OFF IS TO PUT THE CLAW OF A CLAW HAMMER BEHIND THE CENTER TOUCHING THE SHAFT AND GIVE A SHARP TUG TO LEVER IT OFF, YOU CAN PUT A BIT OF PLYWOOD OR SOMETHING BEHIND IT TO SAVE DENTING THE DRUM CASING,  BUT I DID NOT NEED THAT,

PUT THE WHEEL TO ONE SIDE ,

NEXT YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE SPIDER,  LOOK IN THE TOP,  AT THE ENDS OF THE ARMS ARE TWO T40 NUTS, THESE WILL BE VERY TIGHT AND MADE HARDER BY HAVING A LOCKTIGHT ADHESIVE APPLIED AT MANUFACTURE,  INSERT YOUR TOOL INTO THE TOP FOUR AND REMOVE,  YOU WILL HAVE TO HOLD THE TOOL DOWN ONTO THE NUT WITH ONE HAND AND TURN WITH A LOT OF STRENGTH ON THE RATCHET HANDLE, GET SOMEONE TO HELP WITH THIS IF ITS TO MUCH FOR YOU, THEN REMOVE THE NUTS AND PLACE IN THE BOX,

NEXT ROLL THE MACHINE UPSIDE DOWN,  PUT A COUPLE OF BOOKS OR SIMILAR ON THE FLOOR FIRST, TO STOP THE DRUM FALLING TO FAR,  DON'T WORRY IF THE SHOCK ABSORBERS AR THE BOTTOM DISENGAGE,  THEY WILL GO BACK IN NO PROBLEM,  WITH THE MACHINE ON ITS HEAD REPEAT THE NUT REMOVAL PROCEDURE, AT THE SPIDER ARMS,   IT WILL BE EASIER NOW YOU HAVE AN IDEA OF WHATS HAPPENING,

YOU ARE NOW GOING TO MOVE THE MACHINE AGAIN AND THIS IS THE LAST TIME YOU WILL MOVE THE MACHINE BEFORE COMPLETION OF THE JOB,

GET AN OLD PIECE OF ROLLED UP CARPET, OR BLANKETS OR SIMILAR,  PUT IT ON THE FLOOR, TO BE JUST BELOW THE CONTROL KNOBS WHEN YOU LAY THE MACHINE ON ITS FRONT,  AND GENTLY LOWER THE MACHINE,

NOW BACK TO THE CENTRAL BOSS, WHERE THE BEARINGS ARE, SCRATCH A LINE OR ARROW ON THE END OF AN ARM AND THE DRUM, SO THE SPIDER GOES BACK AS IT CAME OFF, THERE IS NOTHING HOLDING THE SPIDER ON NOW ONLY FRICTION,  PULL UP ON THE SPIDER,  IF ITS STUCK,  HIT THE MIDDLE OF THE BOSS WITH YOUR CLAW HAMMER,  HIT IT SQUARELY AND YOU WON'T DAMAGE IT,  PULL UP ON THE SPIDER AS YOU HIT THE CENTER, YOU MAY STRUGGLE BUT IT WILL COME OFF,  DON'T GIVE UP HERE DON'T FORGET YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE,

RIGHT THE SPIDERS OFF, I FOUND THE FRONT BEARING DISINTEGRATED AND THE BALLS SNAPPED IN HALF,  WHAT A MESS,  BUT DON'T WORRY YOU ARE GOING TO NOW REMOVE THE OLD BEARINGS,  TAKE IT TO A HARD STANDING, A BACK YARD, OR SHED,  OR FIND A BIG ROCK,  LAY IT ON TOP,  PUT YOU BITS OF 2"X 2" WOOD UNDERNEATH, EACH SIDE OF THE BEARING,  YOU ARE GOING TO KNOCK THE BEARINGS OUT FROM THE INSIDE,  I USED AN OLD POINTED IRON CHISEL, PUSH IT IN THROUGH THE TOP BEARING AND HIT IT ALL THE WAT ROUND KEEP GOING ROUND, IF ITS NOT MOVING KEEP GOING HITTING HARDER AND HARDER UNTILL IT DROPS OUT, TURN OVER AND REPEAT THE PROCESS,  NEXT CLEAN THE APERTURES WITH PARAFFIN OR TURPS OR WASHING UP LIQUID,  ANYTHING BUT GET IT CLEAN,    YOU CAN GO AND HAVE A WELL EARNED BREW NOW,  TAKE 30 MINUTES,

BEFORE YOU STARTED THIS OPERATION YOU HAVE LOGGED ON TO EBAY,  AND BOUGHT THE APPROPRIATE BEARING AND SEAL SET,  THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISMENT, BUT I USED, EBAY SELLER,  BAILEYSBIGSTORE, AND RECEIVED, HIGH QUALITY BEARINGS AND SEAL  VERY FAST,

WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR BREW,  JUST TAP THE BEARINGS INTO PLACE, DO THIS CAREFULLY ONLY HITTING AT THE EDGES,  IF YOU THINK THEY ARE TO TIGHT FOR YOU TO DRIVE IN,  HEAT THE SPIDER UP WITH A BLOW TORCH,  OR ON THE GAS COOKER, IF YOUR  WIFES OUT,  THEN TAP RIGHT IN TILL THEY WONT GO ANY FURTHER,

NOW PUT THE SEAL BACK WHERE YOU FOUND THE OLD ONE,  CLEAN THE SHAFT OF THE DRUM AND REPLACE THE SPIDER,  LINING UP WITH THE MARKS YOU PUT ON EARLIER,  IT WILL ONLY FIT ON ONE WAY,  PUT ALL EIGHT NUTS BACK IN AND TIGHTEN WELL,  TAP THE DRIVE WHEEL BACK ON, AND SCREW IN THE LARGE HEADED NUT,  TIGHTEN WELL CEAN THE DRIVE BELT AND WHEELS WITH SOME KITCHEN ROLL,

PUT THE BELT BACK ON,   I THINK YOU CAN TAKE IT FROM HERE ON YOUR OWN NOW,  JUST PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN THE REVERSE ORDER THAT YOU THEM TOOK OFF,  IF YOU REALLY DON'T THINK YOU CAN'T MANAGE THE JOB,  DON'T HURT YOURSELF, AND LEAVE IT ALONE,  IF YOU ARE FIT AND STRONG,  REMEMBER THIS, (NEVER PUT YOUR WISHBONE WHERE YOUR BACKBONE OUGHT TO  BE)   AN OLD SAYING,    ALL THE BEST TO YOU ALL ,  STEVENP9328,   STEVE.
