This guide is aimed at people who are new to collecting Civil War items although there is advice for all to this fascinating hobby in this article.
Now listen up! I do not pretend to be an expert on this subject. They all died 100 years ago. So that's out of the way. Now!...Listen and learn.
You have decided to start, for whatever reason, to collect Civil War stuff, maybe swords, or buttons, both fascinating subjects, or perhaps belt buckles, even firearms. Or maybe it's Battlefield Relics that you take a shine too. It might even be a soldiers personal possessions such as his housewife gear (uh... what's that?) or letters to his loved ones. On a less personal level, you may wish to start collecting, say, Confederate Banknotes or Bonds! What about Bowie Knives. Another great idea. Yes?
So how much you gonna spend on this hobby then? 20.00, 30.00, 100.00, 200.00 Dollars/Pounds or whatever a week, month whatever?
Well, here's what I suggest you do with your hobby allowance.
SPEND IT ON BOOKS ON THE SUBJECT YOU CHOOSE, BEFORE YOU BUY A DAMMED THING FROM ANYONE!
Learn, learn and learn what it is you are interested in. But above all......
LEARN WHAT A REAL ITEM LOOKS LIKE AND WHAT A FAKE LOOKS LIKE. GOT THAT!
Learn to distinguish a FAKE from the REAL thing.
This will take a lot of reading. A LOT! But it is worth the effort I promise you. To beat the fake artists out there, you need the knowledge to understand the fine detail and telltale signs that tell you what your bidding on is FOR REAL! This is an absolute MUST! This knowledge, like anything else worth having, cannot be aquired without effort and patience on your part. If you are not prepared to learn the basics then you will lose lots of your hard earned to some bum who just sold you something which has been reproduced from a casting and artificially aged by burying in their garden. This is what they do. AND YOU MAY BUY THAT AMES SWORD OR BELT BUCKLE WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT WAS AT GETTYSBURG BUT DID NOT GET ANY FURTHER THAN SOME SELLERS GARDEN.
Oh, by the way, this is not something special to collecting Civil War items. This you will learn applies to any area of specialist collecting. You see, when you take it in your head to go for it as in getting any darn thing you can on your chosen subject, it tends to take you over a bit, believe me! And the Scammers out their KNOW THIS TOO! You end up going for anything which appears to come from this era or subject. And you will. And you know it because collecting stuff has always made people act like this and it always will. And when you start, it will affect YOU too. So.......
Read this article AGAIN....And once more.....
Then get out there and buy them books. Search eBay on your subject for books or get down to a good bookshop and spend some money. They are out there!
I want people to enjoy their hobby in Civil War collecting and I don't want future collectors and enthusiasts being put off from this fascinating and absorbing subject because of the likes of some who want to take honest people's money off of them selling junk, fake garbage.
If you got any comments on all of this, good or bad, and your new to this subject, feel free to contact for advice.
