One of the ways of remembering which geological period comes where on the stratigraphic column is to learn a simple phrase. This is the one I learnt:

oldest Pink Camels Often Sit Down Carefully, Perhaps Their Joints Creak Terribly youngest

    OLDEST

PRECAMBRIAN

CAMBRIAN

ORDOVICIAN                                         Palaeozoic

SILURIAN

DEVONIAN

CARBONIFEROUS

PERMIAN

-------------------------------------

TRIASSIC

JURASSIC                                                Mesozoic

CRETACEOUS

--------------------------------------

TERTIARY                                               Cenozoic

YOUNGEST

The Cenozoic is split into the Paleogene (epochs: Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene), Neogene (epochs: Miocene, Pliocene) Quaternary (Pleistocene, Holocene). I do know a memonic for remembering this but it is rather rude!
