A multi function flashlight

So I wanted a flashlight. I’ve had loads of different types over the years both in the military and as a civilian. I’ve usually gone with the Maglight but then I heard talk of Olight. It’s a company I have not heard of before being out of the security business for some time I had no need for a top flight flashlight. Lately I have been going out wild camping/night fishing and I really needed a flashlight I could trust and I think I’ve found it.

The Olight M18 Maverick is a cracking wee lamp. It's very compact and light and extremely comfortable in the hand. I've used it in under and overhand grips and found that both buttons can be reached easily. It has the Cree XM-L2 LED, capable of around 500 lumens at maximum power. It’s got a lovely smooth, deep reflector giving the torch a good cone of light. It’s powered by either 2 CR123A2s, 2 RCR123A2s or 1 18650 power cells. All of which are available from Olight. And they are really good quality batteries. The runtimes stated are 2hrs on High(500 Lumens), 9hrs on medium (100 Lumens} and 120hrs on Low {5 Lumens}. I did find a slight drop off after around 10-12 minutes of continuous use but certainly not enough to be a problem. It has has 2 multifunction switches. A Clicky switch on the base cap and a smaller switch of the side of the body. The side switch is inoperable when the clicky switch is in the OFF position but once it’s in operation it has a few different function. First you switch on the clicky switch then the side switch goes through Low, Medium then High beam. If you half press the side switch and hold, the strobe is activated. The strobe is 10hz and uses the full 500 lumens. Momentary light is achieved by half presses on the clicky switch. You can activate the full beam and the strobe from the clicky switch too. This is handy if you need high power or strobe quickly. A half press then full click gives you full beam and 2 half presses followed by a full press will give you strobe.

A bit about the torch build itself. Well it’s made from very high quality aluminium, (Aircraft grade) and it has been anodised to a high standard (anti scratch type III to be exact) meaning that it ain’t gonna rust, scratch or wear in a hurry. This model has a nice stainless steel crenulated bezel for protection of the front glass, which is toughened and non reflective and for use as a striking bezel if you're in the security business. The M18 Maverick also has a tough removable pocket/belt clip which has 3 positions available around the body of the torch or take it off if you find it interferes with grip. Giving you a choice of where the side switch sits in relation to the clip. It even had a small indent on it so you can clip it onto thin material and it will still be held fast. The intelligent driver circuit automatically memorises the last power level used.

It even has Reverse polarity protection to prevent damage from incorrectly fitted power cells and Thermal management to stop overheating. The side switch is very slightly glow in the dark, just enough to locate it in the pitch black and it will also glow red when the battery is low. Don’t worry if you drop it in a puddle either because it’s waterproof to 2 metres as well. Also in the box you get a lanyard, 2 spare O-rings and a spare silicone base cap. It’s the flashlight that keeps on giving.

All in all, this is a great flashlight and it will be a very welcome addition to my bug out kit and also I’ll use it around the house etc. I think that if I was still in the security lark I would be ditching the old Maglite and contacting Olight for a couple of different models to use. I think that I will get another couple of Olight flashlights for different situations anyway. They are my new ‘Go to’ for all thing flashlight.
