The Apple Watch has finally been revealed in all its glory at Apple’s Spring Forward event. We had our wearable appetites whetted back at the end of 2014 when we Apple teased us with some details of their new smartwatch but we now know a whole lot more about the Apple Watch apps, features, design, release date, specs, price point and battery life.

So how does it stack up against the competition? Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the Apple Watch release date on April 24.

Apple Watch Editions

Apple is releasing the Apple Watch in three categories:

Apple Watch Sport – Constructed from anodised aluminium, it’s much lighter than the standard edition. Designed for the sportier Apple connoisseur, it also offers a lightweight and durable and rubber strap.

Apple Watch – The standard version has a stainless steel body with polished metal and space black colour variants. There’s also a host of leather and metal bands available.

Apple Watch Edition – This limited edition version will sit next to the Rolex’s on the shelf. It is encased in 18-katat gold and will start at £8,000.

Apple Watch Display

Apple’s wearable will arrive with two case sizes. The larger is 42mm when measured from the top of the case to the bottom and will come with a 390 x 312 resolution. The smaller – perhaps aimed at the firm’s female clientele - will be 38mm in size. Its resolution will be 340 x 272 pixels. In terms of pixel density, both come out at 335 pixels per inch.

Apple Watch Software

The Apple Watch runs off a specially tailored version of the iOS software you see on the iPhone and the iPad. The company is calling it Watch OS. It’s designed to work around the Digital Crown on the side of the device, which will allow users to cycle through apps and menus without getting too fiddly with the smaller touchscreen. Although a lot of the features can be accessed with the Digital Crown, those Apple Watch displays are still touch sensitive. The screen can tell the difference between a tap and a press, making it easier to input data and confirm selections.

Apple Watch Fitness

The watch is also a great tool for fitness fanatics, thanks to the built-in Workout app. It’ll track your progress, inform you how you’re progressing towards your movement targets and will even give you a friendly reminder if you’ve been seated for too long. The built-in heart rate sensor collects your heart rate at all times and even allows you to send your current heart rate to a special someone… as long as they’re also wearing an Apple Watch.

Apple Watch App Store

Just like the iPhone and iPad, there’ll be an App Store with third-party applications dedicated for use on the Apple Watch. Apple did not reveal many of the third-party apps during the event, but among them will be plenty of popular platforms. Shazam will listen out for the name of new songs, you’ll be able to like photos on Instagram, order cabs through Uber, view your Twitter feed, and unlock the hotel room door at W hotels.

Apple Pay with Apple Watch

Apple is hoping the Apple Watch can further its Apple Pay mobile payments platform. Those wearing the watch will be able to make payments at participating retailers by flashing their wearable at an in store reader. Users will receive haptic feedback to confirm the payment has been successful. Apple Pay is only available in the United States right now, but it’s scheduled to arrive in the United Kingdom later in 2015.

Apple Watch Battery Life

Long the subject of intense speculation, the Apple Watch will get wearers through a full day without requiring a recharge. The firm claims the average user will get around 18 hours of use out of their timepiece before they’ll need to replenish using the unique magnetic charging dock.
