Aromatherapy - Which oil to use?

Here is an A-Z of common ailments/conditions/mood states that respond well to aromatherapy, and the appropriate oil is listed together with the best way to use it. 

Where you see the words massage blend or blend, mix five drops of the aromatherapy oil given with two tablespoons of massage oil eg sweet almond oil.

  • A    Acne - put tea tree or lavender neat directly onto the affected area (the only two oils you can apply neat).
  •    Anger - sniff chamomile directly from the bottle or have a relaxing massage with a chamomile massage blend.
  • A    Anxiety - massage with sweet almond oil (two tablespoons) containing one drop lemon balm, one drop frankincense, one drop neroli, one drop ylang ylang and one drop vetiver).  Alternatively choose one of these oils and use five drops.  Have hot baths containing up to five drops of any of these oils.
  • A    Athelete's foot - mix two drops patchouli, two drops tea tree and one drop of lavender in two tablespoons of massage oil and apply to the affected area.  Leave on for at least an hour.
  • B   Boils - put tea tree or lavender neat directly onto boil.
  • B   Bronchitis - apply chest rub made from two drops eucalyptus, two drops tea tree and one drop sandalwood in two tablespoons of massage oil.
  • C  Childbirth - partner gently apply sweet almond oil blend onto woman's back (make up a 100ml bottle containing ten drops jasmine, five drops clary sage and five drops lavender a week before the due date).  Make sure you like the smell before applying it during the birth and that it is right for you.
  • C   Colds - apply chest rub made from two drops tea tree, one drop of lemon, one drop of rosemary and one drop eucalyptus.
  •   Constipation - massage sweet almond oil (two tablespoons) with three drops black pepper and two drops marjoram.
  • C    Cough - as with bronchitis.
  • D   Dandruff - use three drops of rosemary in your shampoo and conditioner.
  • D   Depression - sniff sandalwood, clary sage or ylang ylang from the bottle, or have hot bath with five drops of chosen oil.
  • E   Eczema - make up blend of two drops patchouli, one drop lavender, one drop chamomile and one drop rose in two tablespoons of massage oil and apply to affected area.
  •   Fear - sniff marjoram or frankincense from the bottle.
  •   Fever - make up blend of one drop peppermint, one drop black pepper, one drop patchouli, one drop of tea tree and one drop of eucalyptus in two tablespoons massage oil and apply to chest and back.
  • F   Flu - as for colds.
  • G   Gout - have hot bath with five drops of rosemary oil.
  • G   Grief - sniff rose oil directly from the bottle.
  •   Headache - rub four drops of neat lavender oil onto the temples or have hot bath with five drops of lavender or make up cold compress of three drops lavender and two drops rosemary  into icy cold water and soak a flannel in, then wring out the flannel dry and apply to head.
  • I   Inflammation  - put five drops of chamomile oil into two tablespoons of sweet almond oil and apply to the affected area very gently.
  • I   Insomnia - put one drop of lavender oil onto your pillow or just before bed have a hot bath with two drops lavender and three drops vetiver.
  • J   Jaundice - mix five drops of rosemary in two tablespoons of sweet almond oil and apply to the abdomen.
  • K  -
  • L  Lice - Mix five drops bergamot, five drops eucalyptus, five drops geranium and five drops lavender and five drops rosemary into two tablespoons of sweet almond oil and apply to the hair and scalp.  The concentration of oils is much higher than normal.  Leave on overnight if possible then wash off with shampoo.  Comb through the hair with a nit comb daily.  Repeat aromatherapy treatment twice more every few days.
  • M  Memory - sniff rosemary oil directly from the bottle.
  • M  Menopause - have hot baths with five drops rose oil or regular massage using sweet almond oil (two tablespoons) with three drops rose oil and two drops geranium.
  • M  Migraine - into very hot water place two drops marjorm, two drops lavender and one drop peppermint and soak a flannel in, then wring it out almost dry and place on the back of the neck.
  • Nerves before an event  - sniff marjoram, chamomile, ylang ylang or neroli from the bottle.
  • N  Nervous exhaustion - regular massage with almond oil containing two drops petitgrain, one drop jasmine, one drop vetiver and one drop ylang ylang.
  • O  Oily skin - have a hot bath with five drops of geranium.
  • P   Panic - sniff frankincense from the bottle.
  • P  PMT - massage with massage blend made up of two drops of geranium oil and three drops rosemary in two tablespoons of almond oil for fluid retention.  For irritability, massage with massage blend made up of one drop chamomile, one drop petitgrain, one drop rose and two drops vetiver in two tablespoons almond oil or have hot bath with five drops of any of these oils.
  • Q -
  • R  Rejuvination for skin can be encouraged by regular massage with massage oil containing three drops lavender and two drops neroli, or hot baths containing five drops of either of these oils.
  • R  Rheumatism - apply massage blend to affected area with two drops chamomile, one drop lavender, one drop rosemary and one drop marjoram in two tablespoons of sweet almond oil.
  • S  Stress - have regular massage with massage oil containing two drops vetiver, one drop lavender and two drops ylang ylang, and hot baths containing five drops vetiver.
  • T  Tension - emotional tension - as for stress.
  • T  Tension - muscular tension and stiffness - have massage with massage oil containing two drops black pepper, one drop marjorm and two drops of rosemary.
  • U  Urticaria, an allergic skin reaction.  Use an oil blend made up of sweet almond oil with three drops chamomile and two drops melissa.
  • Verrucas - use tea tree or lemon oil neat daily and apply plaster.
  • W  Warts - use tea tree or lemon oil neat daily and apply plaster.
