Astra H Engine Buying Guide

The Opel Astra H is a compact car available as a five-door hatchback, three-door hatchback, and five-door estate as well as in many other body styles in different countries. The Astra H can have a petrol or diesel engine, or even a turbocharged one. When looking for an engine replacement for your Opel Astra H, use the model name and the engine type to find a match.

Engine Types

Typically, engines divide into categories according to the fuel they use: petrol and diesel. In a petrol engine, the fuel and air mix before compression, while in a diesel engine only air goes through the compression process. Petrol engines can run at higher speeds than diesel engines, but they are also less efficient. Diesel cars are slightly less reliable than petrol cars and more expensive to repair, although they provide better fuel economy. Diesel engines provide more pulling power and torque at lower revs, thus being perfect for overtaking and towing. Generally, petrol cars require more fuel and thus cause more harm to the environment. Many Opel Astra H engines feature turbocharging, which offers increases in their performance and efficiency.

Engine Specifications

Engines come with a list of specifications to look for. The engine capacity of an Astra H is in the range of 1.2 to 2.0 litres and this refers to the amount of air that the cylinders can accommodate. The "cc" in engine specifications denotes cubic centimetres and refers to the volume that pistons inside the cylinders sweep in a single movement from top dead centre to the bottom dead centre. This is another way to express the engine's capacity. The "bhp" or "hp" value marks the horsepower of the engine, indicating the rate of doing the work in the engine. One horsepower equals about 746 watts. Typically, the more horsepower a car has, the more powerful it is, but this also depends on the car's weight. The amount of horsepower must be high relative to the car's weight.
