Asus 901 Review

The "big brother" to the 701, and powered by the mighty Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz processor this netbook will satisfy most people and is capable of everything except high end gaming and media editing. In design broadly similar to the 700/701 but benefiting from the 10 inch screen, unless you like Linux its best to go for the Windows XP version. This is a surprisingly fast machine which steps its processor speed as required to conserve battery usage. The 1.3 Mp camera works well and is ideal for video chats like Skype, Live Messenger. Screen is clear and bright. Keyboard is good, so is sound from speakers, and the twin noise cancelling microphones work well too. WiFi is sensitive and acts well. For some this could be their only machine. I tend to run my netbooks with Gmail and Google Chrome but no Antivirus. I have had no problems with doing this and using no AV does speed up any machine. Prices on Ebay for these 901s vary but a good late 2010 price is £130. You may bid lower. Really for ordinary usage there are no limitations to these machines and they are highly reliable. The test of using Live UK TV on TV Catchup worked well. Being replaced by newer but similar Asus netbooks, second hand they are a really good buy. Check for Linux or XP.
