Welcome to the ebay community if you enjoy sharing your love of books you are very welcome to contact me on ebay about all types of books Fiction, Non Fiction, Classics. I also list a few tips on selling books on ebay that may be useful. I am a book magpie I love collecting them I also volunteer at the Charles Dickens Museum in London one afternoon a week. I am not a professional bookseller but i do know a little about books as a hobby.
(1) First editions some books have first edition clearly printed on the first few pages in if not we need to look at the print run these are the numbers found on the publisher information page.
The numbers will appear starting with a 1 if a first edition ie: 136578954324 this is the most common way.
(2) Foxing is where pages may have dots or just Browning where time, light, and air take there toll.
(3) the spine is the back of the book this could be creased on paperbacks where read.
So with selling books we need to write a good description people will still purchase books that have browning pages or have an inscription ie: to jane happy xmas love nan, as long as the seller adds all this.
When books are on a bookshelf they can get minor scuffs we call this shelf wear, if the corners are a little squashed we call this 'corners bumped' then we have spine damage or creasing. Any loose pages just tell the customer they sometimes prefer to do their own repairs. The most amazing thing i have found that many second hand shops and stalls the sellers never check a few pages in the see if a book has been signed by Author.
This is just a few tips don't forget you may always contact me.
Happy book hunting or selling Ray.
