HI THERE ,WITH THE EVER DEEPENING LULL IN CONSTRUCTION NOW IS THE TIME IF EVER THERE WAS TO GO OUT AND FIND THAT DIGGER YOU ALWAYS WANTED.
THE CHOICE AT THE AUCTIONS/SMALL ADS AND EBAY ARE MORE ABUNDANT THAN EVER AS THE MACHINES BOUGHT IN THE BOOM TIMES OF THREE YEARS AGO ARE NOW FOR THE MAIN PART STOOD IDLE.
AS A PLANT FITTER OF SOME TWENTY YEARS WITH A CERTAIN DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE IN THIS FIELD--AND SEEING AS IM A LITTLE BORED THIS EVENING I THOUGHT I WOULD SHOW YOU HOW TO SPOT A GOOD ONE.
AS 1.5 TON MACHINES HAVE A SMALL FOOTPRINT THEY ARE PRONE TO FALLING OVER WHILST LOADING OR WORKING CLOSE TO TRENCHES ---SO WHERE DO WE LOOK TO SEE IF THE MACHINE OF YOUR CHOICE HAS HAD A TUMBLE,--YOU MAY THINK AH ITS ONLY BEEN ON ITS SIDE WHATS THE PROBLEM THERE,WELL IT DEPENDS HOW LONG ITS BEEN RUN ON ITS SIDE AS OIL STARVATION WRECKS LITTLE DIESELS AND A HORIZONTALLY CRANKED DIGGER RUNNING WITH A VERTICAL CRANKSHAFT WILL HAVE A PROBLEM PICKING UP OIL FROM ITS SUMP AND AS MOST GOONS ON SITE DONT SHUT DOWN AND LOOK FOR A MEANS OF RIGHTING THE DIGGER WITHOUT ITS OWN POWER.
A SURE SIGN YOURDIGGER HAS BEEN FOR A LAY DOWN IS A DAMAGED RADIATOR AS THE ENGINE MOUNTS CANT STOP THE MOTOR FROM  MOVING SO FAR SIDEWAYS .
ANOTHER SIGN OF OIL STARVATION DAMAGE IS A KNOCK/TAP THATS MORE PRONOUNCED AT TICKOVER-WHEN THE OIL PRESSURE IS LOW BUT SEEMS TO LESSEN WITH HIGHER REVS.
THE NEXT TEST FOR YOUR MACHINE WOULD BE A FULL FUNCTION TEST TAKE EACH FUNCTION/RAM TO THE ENDS OF ITS TRAVEL AND LISTEN TO THE ENGINE AS IT LOADS IT SHOULD CARRY A FULL STALL OF THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM WITH A SLIGHT CHANGE IN WORK EFFORT AND A LITTLE BLACK SMOKE CHECK THE SLEW RING FOR EXCESSIVE PLAY BY EXTENDING THE BOOM STRAIGHT OUT FORWARDS AND PUSH DOWN ON THE BOOM AND LIFT OFF LOOKING FOR ANY MOVEMENT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNDERCARRIAGE AND MAIN WELDMENT/CHASSIS ,ANY EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THIS AREA INDICATES POOR SERVICING AT LOW HOURS AND IS WELL WORTH WALKING AWAY FROM.
CHECK ALL LINKS AND BUSHINGS ON THE BOOM AND ENSURE  ALL BUCKET PIN BUSHES ARE ON THE BOOM AND WEAR HASNT STARTED TO EAT INTO THE PARENT METAL OF THE BOOM--AGAIN IF ITS NEGLECTED AT THIS KEY AREA YOU SHOULD START TO ASK YOURSELF WHERE ELSE ITS BEEN SKIMPED ON,
CHECK THE KINGPOST PINS AND BUSHES BY PLACING THE BUCKET ON THE DECK AND JUST WORK THE FREE PLAY AGAIN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF PLAY IS ACCEPTABLE HERE AS ITS ONE OF THE MORE CHEAPER FIXES
TRACKS ARE GETTING CHEAPER BUT NONE THE LESS CHECK FOR WEAR LOOSE CLEATS CRACKS ETC AS THA LOSS OF A TRACK CAN SPELL A COSTLY WAIT ON SITE.
ALSO CHECK THE SPROCKETS AND THE OFTEN OVERLOOKED IDLERS FOR BEARING FAILURE SIEZURES ETC.
FINALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT TO CHECK IS THE OWNER IS HE A KNOWLEDGEABLE BLOKE THAT OWNS A GREASE GUN AND KNOWS HIS MACHINE AS HE`S DUG A FEW HOLES IN HIS TIME ---OR IS THE GUY A DEALER WITH A BIG CONTRACT WITH A PAINT COMPANY AND A SHOTBLASTERS THAT COULD TURN A HEAP OF JUNK INTO A VERY PRETTY HEAP OF JUNK.
AH WELL THATS ABOUT IT YOUR AS CLUED UP AS ME,ONE LAST POINT CHECK THE FILTERS ON THE MACHINE,DO THEY LOOK LIKE THEYVE EVER BEEN CHANGED IS THE ANTI FREEZE UPTO STRENGTH---IF IT LOOKS LIKE WATER WITH NO ANTIFREEZE IN THIS COULD MEAN OVERHEATING ISSUES.
