Hello hello hello, so you're thinking about buying an ex police vehicle ? ok lets cut the chase here .. Police vehicles are purchased or leased as Tools , not used for shopping trips ( ok maybe the odd trip to Mac Donald's) They remain in service for a period normally of 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first .

Every vehicle should be checked daily or upon shift swap ...sometimes they are sometimes they are not ! Cosmetic and mechanical defects should be recorded as the officer using the vehicle is accountable.

Nearly all police vehicle will be registered to the Chief Constable of which ever force it came from, do not be fooled into thinking that the car on sale was ' the chiefs personal car '!!!Undercover cars are normally on hire from one of the many car hire companies and  such vehicles will have no links to the police whatsoever.

Service schedules are normally every 5,000 miles, most parts used will be genuine but given local funding policy sometimes after market BS approved parts are used.

HPI clear ...LoL! Police vehicles are covered by in house Government insurance and rarely if ever appear on the 'Hit list ' they simply get repaired or sold as break only at a car auction . 99% of police vehicles will have had paintwork repairs .

Liaison cars & Training cars  .... An interesting term used by ebay car sellers for un marked police cars or cid cars .A liaison car is normally one of those small hatchbacks you may see with police decals on its doors and reflective tape on boot but with no lights on roof .These are not used for emergency calls and subsequently often not maintained as often as patrols cars .

Gearboxes!!

Quite often Police vehicles,with the exception of motorway Rv's  will have done most of there miles about town.. stop start... 1st gear second gear 3rd gear stop ...always check the box for whines

Yeah but its chipped!! Re mapping , blue chipping  costs about £500 per car and increases torque and BHP in turn it reduces reliability and engine life so its rare that police cars are 'chipped' other than some armed responce vehicles and traffic units.. A standard T5 volvo is 250 - 300 BHP  so who needs a chip!?

Uprated  brakes ? Same applies here as with mapping , rarely are police cars messed about with other than as above ..for instance the t5 will have 310 mm discs rather than 300's

Wiring ... Your 'new ' car will have more dead wires than a BT engineer , redundant fuse boxes in the boot and under the bonnet , these will have been used for blues & twos , alley lamps, tetra radio etc. Sometimes these can be useful if you want to wire in a car amp etc.

Wear to trim ..... Holes in dash following removal of police equipment will be evident saggy drivers seats common as are door cards scuffs. The back seat will always be loose this is because each time a prisoner is conveyed the back seat will be lifted to establish if anything has been secreted...much more fun than looking down the back of the sofa!

To sum it up:

Not all ex police cars are a bad buy , normally half the used retail price of the same private model and not all police cars are in white , quite a few are now finished in silver or red . Some dealers will have repainted roofs ,repaired dashboards, and changed seats and door cards ... Never the less, when you drive your new car down the road be sure of one thing ...The local crims will know its the beast, feds ,Mr plod, five 0 , buzzies, boys in blue, old bill etc etc etc and run off shouting ON TOP !!!
