Batman Lego Buying Guide

With the release of films such as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Batman vs Superman, Gotham City's shadowy superhero Batman is a favourite figure amongst children of all ages.

Beginning life as a comic book character created by artist Bob Kane in 1939, the man in the Batmobile has gone on to star in live-action TV shows, animated episodes and films, becoming a household name. Superhero Lego, or more specifically, Batman Lego, has been around since 2006 and is licensed by DC Comics. The Batman Lego Box Sets available on eBay and online include vehicles, characters and scenes from the comics and films.

The Popularity of Batman and Other Superheroes

Superheroes have always been popular and in 2006, DC Comics licensed the first range of Superhero Lego. In 2012, DC Universe brought out their Superheroes Lego line, which consists of more than 17 sets - almost all of which include Batman. Gotham City's dark defender is popular with children and adults, with many of the Lego kits available going on to become collector’s items that sell for hundreds of pounds on eBay. The Superhero Lego range includes popular comic book figures such as:

  • Superman
  • The Green Lantern
  • Spiderman
  • Batman
  • Wolverine

As well as the superheroes the range includes their enemies too and Lego has created a range of enemy Minifigures to choose from.

How to Choose Batman Lego

A good way to choose Batman Lego is to shop online on eBay where a range of kits and Minifigures can be found listed under the category ‘Construction Toys and Kits’.  Purchasing a book such as ‘Lego Batman: The Visual Dictionary’ published by The Penguin Group, can be a good idea as every Lego Batman set and Minifigure in the Arkham Universe is listed with pictures and descriptions.

There are a number of websites with information on the Batman Lego kits available, and online auction sites such as eBay offer the opportunity to bid for mint-condition kits and Minifigures for collectors looking to add to their existing collection.

Collectors Kits and Accessories

Mint condition collectors kits can be found online, on eBay, and often sell for many hundreds of pounds. The older sets such as The Batmobile Collector’s Edition can fetch around £300 - £400 on online auction sites, but it is possible for serious collectors and enthusiasts to find affordable sets for less.

For collectors in particular, losing an accessory from a Box Set or Minifigure can be upsetting and can detract from the value of their set. Batman Lego Accessories can be found on eBay and online, ranging from replacement weapons and guns for Batman figures to custom-made capes and new hair styles.

Minifigures

As well as box sets and vehicles, a range of Lego Batman Minifigures are available to purchase online on eBay. The complete range is as follows:

  • Alfred the Butler
  • Arkham Asylum Guard (two styles)
  • Bane
  • Batman (four styles)
  • Bruce Wayne
  • Catwoman (two styles)
  • Harley Quinn
  • Killer Croc
  • Mr Freeze
  • Mr Freeze’s Henchman
  • Nightwing
  • Poison Ivy
  • Robin (two styles)
  • Scarecrow
  • The Joker
  • The Joker’s Henchman
  • The Penguin
  • The Riddler
  • Two-Face
  • Two-Face’s Henchman

It is easy to find most Batman Minifigures online by using eBay to search, and they are generally very reasonably priced in comparison to buying box sets. If a Minifigure is lost from a box set then it is simple to find a replacement online.

Choosing Age Appropriate Lego Box Sets

With the variety of Batman Lego Box Sets for sale online and in retail stores, the age range for each set varies. Minifigures are not suitable for children aged 3 years and under due to the small parts involved that could present a choking hazard.  Minifigures are generally recommended for children aged 5 years and older. Lego recommend that Lego Box Sets with smaller parts, such as The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape are suitable for older children aged from 7-14. It is important to check the age range on any listing you bid for, as the age range does vary according to the parts included and complexity of the set.
