Star Wars is back with brand new game Battlefront. Once again players can dive into the action with the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire. Of course, Star Wars has a long, rich history in gaming and generations of players have fought it out in the galaxy far, far away. We look back at some of the best moments from Star Wars gaming history.

1. That Moment When: You First Blew Up The Death Star

Back in 1983 when video arcades were still in the process of becoming a global phenomenon, Atari answered the prayers of every Star Wars fan with Star Wars: The Video Game. Aspiring Jedis could slide into the cockpit of an X-Wing Fighter and take part in a dogfight with TIE Fighters before flying through the Death Star’s trench and blasting its Exhaust Port. It was as close to joining the rebellion as we’d come thus far and the memory of the Death Star exploding into a million blinking lights still gives us old fogies a thrill three decades later.

2. That Moment When: You Fought For The Galactic Empire

For longtime fans of the movies, signing up to hunt down Luke Skywalker and his mates may have been initially a bitter pill to swallow – even if they got to fly a TIE Fighter to do it. However, once they dived into the game they soon changed their tune as the narrative consumed them.

In TIE Fighter the game, the Empire is portrayed as a force trying to staunch the chaos in the galaxy and the Rebels are a bunch of selfish terrorists hell-bent on ripping down the system. As the TIE pilot you sat at the centre of this swirl of propaganda and became immersed in the Empire’s message. By the time you were one of Darth Vader’s wingmen, you didn’t even bat an eyelid.

3. That Moment When: You Crashed A Star Destroyer

In all honesty, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed isn’t a very good game. However, it has a moment in that involves using The Force to bring down a Star Destroyer. Yes, you read that correctly. Admittedly the process involved in doing this is maddeningly frustrating but in a way that makes the sight of the giant ship smashing into the ground all the more sweeter when it happens.

4. That Moment When: The Phantom Menace Didn’t Suck

If you’ve ever wanted to know what happened in the first prequel and can’t bear the thought of sitting through it, pick up Lego Star Wars. Since no one talks throughout the game -  back then all the Lego characters did was mug for the camera – you have the events played out in front of you without George Lucas’s godawful dialogue or Jar Jar Binks’s borderline racist accent.

5. That Moment When: You Were the Star in Your Own Star Wars Adventure

The Knights Of The Old Republic is arguably the best Star Wars game ever made. Set before the events of any of the original Star Wars films, it plonked players in the boots of a young Jedi and followed them as they chose the Light or Dark side of the Force. It was as close to being Luke Skywalker as could get and its probably the only decent prequel in the entire Star Wars canon.

6. That Moment When: You Shot Darth Vader

With the Star Wars Battlefront Beta live at present, you might know that there’s a power up that transforms a player into Darth Vader. Once this happens, that player might want to run like hell before everyone on the other team targets them in revenge for the prequels. “Take that, Annakin! You whining, youngling-killing wimp!”
