5mm Dark Lense Opto Package.

This  T-1 3/4 (5mm) package is used for many/most clear and coloured LED Infra Red NIR & Ambient coloured light Opto uses.
An aspiring Electronics builder can see Dozens of them  on E Bay and the Internet , quoting Vishay and Phillips part Numbers and Specification sheets all over. 
If buying these for a very specific Circuit (as  most people often do) getting the right item is critical and sadly an absolute Minefield, as I have discovered. I have now had at least 60 dodgy items from 5 different UK and Oriental sellers, all were Useless to me.

Trouble is many sellers get a bag of cheap x50 or x100 buckshee surplus LDR's light dependant Resistors from a Chinese seller for £2-£3  maybe $3-$4 delivered, then maybe not understanding what they are (I am trying to be generous Hearted here) or believing most E Bayers are too stupid to tell, get some part Number and Spec sheet off Google, then flog them as far more useful & expensive Photo - Transistors or Photo- Diodes as sold by  top-quality-tools here for instance.When you message them over their unsuitable devices they frequently will not respond. 

To the seller it's just an easy mark up,  after all they sell them for only £1.69 £2.50 delivered, and look identical, "who will know the difference..right!". Wrong guys, if you can use a Multimeter and an Infra Red Source (like a Laser or just an IR led) , you establish what they are or are not very easily indeed, and mark them as 'not as described' if worth returning.
 
To the circuit builder (maybe a Student Robot Builder or Emitter-Security device Builder) needing an actual Voltage output from his Ambient Light or (invisible) 800 Nm-940 Nm Infra Red Photo Diode or Photo Transistor device is Critical!

With a small Voltage output (maybe 0.25-0.4 Volts) they can be used as a trigger, or to Amplify a Signal, all these miss sold - faulty items are totally useless.

Getting these whether expensive or cheap will mean certain failure of his/ her project from the very start, after he has paid six or ten times It's value, and probably waited for many Days for Delivery, frustrating to say the least.

Like very many of the useless DIY Radio and Circuits many put on Google Image, often drew by Amateurs or for a Joke on us.

I have very recently bought x40 IR Items just like these from an Established Advertised large UK Electronics Retailers , and yes you guessed it, have received Malaysian made Ambient Light sensors that make 0.3-0.45 Volts under Ambient Light just fine, but under a powerful Infra Red Laser source made Nil Voltage when hit point blank even with a correct Voltage Bias applied. Perhaps not their fault, they have probably been supplied faulty Items unbeknownst to them, and Thankfully at least with these seller you can return them for (maybe) a refund or satisfactory suitable replacements, which I have.

With IC's Transistors and similar components the item part Numbers (and sometimes the makers logo) are usually printed clearly upon the device, so you won't have  problems as a rule,  even from China there are bargains to be had if you plan your Purchase to allow for the 14-16 Day delivery time.

LDR Symbol.

LDR Light Dependent Resistor (cheaper and less useful).
Several types visually but many look as shown. Resistance decreases with the level of light, makes No Voltage whatsoever.

Photo Diode Symbol.

Photo Diode Ambient or IR.
Makes some output Voltage increasing with level of Light. IR specific should give good output from IR source.

Photo Transistor Symbol.

Photo Transistor Ambient or IR.
Acts and is used like a Photo Diode but gives far more Output as it is Amplified.
