Naturally Coloured Coral
Blue coral from Southeast Asia is a naturally blue coloured sponge coral. In order to make the coral suitable for use in jewellery making, the coral first needs to be processed. This includes injection with resin since natural coral is very jagged and sharp and polishing to create a smooth surface. A naturally coloured blue coral stone will normally resemble the stone shown in this example. It may be lighter or darker and irregularly patterned, but the overall colour will be similar to this example.
Artificially Coloured Coral
Sometimes blue coral is produced by using normal white coral, which is far more common than genuine blue coral, and injecting it with blue coloured resin. Plain white coral is more readily available and is often used to create blue coloured coral jewellery which is attractive as it displays nice patterning. However, the colour is usually more pronounced as shown in this example. Plain white coral is also commonly used to produce coral in other colours such as red, green pink, grey, black, brown, yellow etc. Such corals still comprise of genuine coral, usually white coral, and can be attractive with their brighter colours.
