Boat gadgets for safe boat trips and a fun time
A few years ago, we seriously considered buying a boat. Being the geek that I am, the first thing I did was look into gadgets that we would need to buy to go with the boat.
I looked at gadgets that would make our boat rides safer and gadgets for having a little fun. In the end, we decided to hold off on our boat purchase until our kids were a bit older and could help more with the boat. But that doesn't stop me from keeping up on the gadgets we'll need.

GPS

I'm not very good at directions, so my first concern was how we would know where we were going. There aren't any roads to follow.
Just like a car, there is a  Marine GPS for boats. The GPS helps guide you to where you want to go.
I found that the colour units are easier to read than the black and white ones. Some come with a fish finder and weather information.  Depending on how much fishing you will do, that might be useful. The weather information is definitely useful because you don't want to get stuck out on the high seas during a hurricane.

Underwater Digital Camera

My plan for the boat was to spend a lot of time swimming and exploring the waters so I definitely wanted an underwater digital camera.
I prefer this over a waterproof case. The entire camera is built to be used in the water. The slots for battery, SD cards and plugs are all covered tightly so no water will get in.
I also found that most waterproof cameras are tougher and can withstand more abuse.  Check the documentation for the camera to be sure of what extremes it can endure.

Wind Meter

I never thought about it before looking at boats, but wind is a huge factor. The wind affects your speed and steering on a boat. A  wind meter is a definitely must.
A wind meter will tell you how fast the wind is blowing and the direction it is blowing in. You can make the correct adjustments according to the wind meter.

Waterproof Tablet

I'm not sure if this was more of a want than a need, but a  waterproof tablet sure would come in handy.
Our kids were younger and I thought this would be a good way to keep them entertained during the down time on the boat. And I wouldn't have to worry about it getting wet since there seems to be a lot of water involved with boating.

Motion Sickness Band

I don't usually get motion sickness, but some of my family does. Having a few motion sickness bands on hand will make the boat ride more pleasant.
The bands are worn on the wrist with the pressure point on the inner side of the wrist. I wore one when I had morning sickness while pregnant and it definitely helped.

Fish Finder GPS

I previously a Marine GPS may come with a fish finder, but if you are an avid fisherman, you will want a separate  fish finder GPS because you can get more features.
The fish finder GPS is more detailed and you can mark your favourite fishing spots so you can easily return later.

Large Boat Cooler

This may seem obvious, but a  large boat cooler is a MUST. Be sure to have plenty of water on hand. The saying, "water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink" is absolutely correct. Being out in the sun, you can easily get dehydrated.
And if this is a more adult boat ride, load up on some adult beverages.

Personal Locator Beacon

One of my fears about boating is ending up somewhere in the middle of the ocean with water everywhere and not knowing how to get home. That is where a personal locator beacon is a safety must.
A personal locator beacon is a small device that can easily be kept in a pocket or in a life jacket. Look for one that has:
  • GPS positioning
  • A powerful signal
  • Homing capabilities for emergencies
That way if the whole boat is lost, you have the device. And if you go off the boat to swim or explore, you can take it with you.

These devices will give you a good start in a safe and fun boat experience. Don't forget to have enough  life jackets for everyone on board.
Be sure to check out my eBay guide,  Protecting Your Skin From the Sun for more gadgets that are helpful for boat rides. You will be spending a lot of time in the sun.
