From base metal chapter

We start from a topic of the 1980 Isle of Man Christmas 50p Mule coin. It may not cover other mule coins in this chapter, but we try best to share what we have with all serious collectors or people who are eager to learn in numismatic.

In 1980, the Pobjoy Mint (hereafter, the Mint) was under commission from the government of Isle of Man to strike Viking Boats on 50ps in order for attending Odins Raven Viking Exhibition in New York. As a result, they brought so-called Prooflike 50p coins there. Simultaneously, the idea of Christmas on 50ps came out this year. A year after, the tourist trophy theme found on 50ps but did not strike as diamond finish T.T. 50ps in 1980. 1980 it is really a key movement to let the Mint give itself enough room climbing into top mint via heptagon (i.e., 7-sided) 50p coins during the contemporary age.

It seems mistake is more common sense when Mints organise to produce and release new modern numismatic products in U.K.. For instance, 2008 undated 20p coin (struck by the Royal Mint), 2014 Britannia £2 silver bullion coin (struck by the Royal Mint). This piece of information argues that every one makes mistake no matter you are a government hold mint or a private mint. However, a error mule coin made by the Royal Mint will fetch loads of money, but a private mint made is not a thing that people will notice them.

The IOM Christmas 50p coins was created by the commercial purpose. So they minted xmas 50ps as prooflike coins in order to compete in the market. Don't forget that the Mint is a private company registered in England & Wales in 1960s. It is a very important key fact here. Also the Mint has a very short history in numismatic industry. The mint first master tried very hard to establish reputation in Europe. For marketing purpose, they named xmas 50ps as "Diamond Finish" coins.
