Budget Decorating: 5 More Easy Tips from On Sutton Place

Decorating on a budget can be a challenge...but it can be done and done well. There are a few things to keep in mind that will help you along the way. One of my best tips is to simply buy what you love. Don't be tempted to buy that trendy vase that you saw in a popular home decor shop. Don't give in to the latest "must have" colours...unless of course they are colours you truly love. By investing in pieces that speak to your own design style, you will be able to curate rooms that reflect you and your family. When someone walks in your home, they will know immediately who you are and what is important to you. Fill your walls with art that reflects your interests along with family photographs. Display your collections. Decorate with family heirlooms. All of these things will result in rooms that will last and that you won't grow tired of.

One of the easiest ways to add your own signature style to your decor and not break the bank is to use fabric...specifically on cushions. They are an easy and budget friendly way to switch up the look of a room. If you stick to a few main colours, any pattern or textured fabric will work together. For example, my colour palette is yellow and blue. I have 9 different fabric patterns in my cushion cover collection. The only reason they work together is because I kept the colour palette the same. Try to mix geometric with  floral, solid with a pattern. By keeping your colour palette consistent, you can move your cushions from room to room for a completely different look.

Along the same line as the fabric tip, it's a good idea to keep your paint colours in the same colour family. Paint is cheap. Paint is easy. Paint is the quickest way to transform a room. Neutrals are, of course, probably the easiest option. Once you paint a room in a neutral colour, the sky is the limit for your decor. My tip for paint colour is to pick one colour you love and then pick additional colours from the same paint swatch. For example, I picked the colour Naval (a lovely navy blue) for my front door. From that same swatch, I chose colours for my kitchen and entry hall. By keeping my colours consistent, I can move accessories from room to room for a new look. That completely eliminates the need to go shopping to freshen things up. Just shop your rooms!

A very quick and easy way to refresh a space is to change out old or outdated hardware. Think  light fixtures, switch plates, outlet covers,  door knobs and hinges. Try to keep your metals in the same colour family for flow and a high-end look. If replacing is not in the budget (and your hardware is in good shape) simply buy a can or two of spray paint. Make sure the fixtures are clean and use a good spray primer. I've done this in almost every room of my house. I went from nasty, old brass to clean  oil rubbed bronze for hardly any money.

This is something you may not have thought of…but I have actually done it and it worked out great. A few years ago, I had to replace a  deck table that sat four with one that sat six. So I needed two more chairs to make the new table work.  I had a 2-seated glider but that wasn’t doing me any good. Enter my girl friend, Mary Beth. She has the same furniture I do on the front porch of her house. I asked if I could swap my glider for two chairs and she said yes. Problem solved. If a friend has something you need or like, just ask. You may be able to work out a deal that benefits both of you.

To sum things up:

1. Buy what you love...stay away from trends.
2. Use fabric and cushions to reflect your own signature style.
3. Keep your paint colours consistent.
4. Replace or paint outdated or old hardware.
5. Swap with your friends.
