Why would I pay more for the same thing?

As a Beauty Therapist I am often asked why department store cosmetics brands are so much more expensive than high street brands when they say they do exactly the same thing. Well, it all boil's down to the quality of the ingredients used and how they are sourced and manufactured. Collagen is a prime example, cheaper brands use collagen that is Bovine derived (sourced from Cow's eye's). They are readily available as a waste product of the meat market and do not combine well with Human DNA. Marine-derived Collagen (usually from seaweed) is used in the manufacture of more prestigious brands and is much harder to source, refine & produce. This means that the product produced is more expensive, but is in higher quantities and is 'understood' by your body allowing you to see the improvement that the product promised on the label.

Snobbery!

I explain in short that I am a product snob, and only use prestige brand cosmetics. This is a bit of a half-truth, it's not the brand it's-self but the quality. If you are buying a product with the purpose of improving an aspect of yourself, be it appearance or well-being, then remember that you get one body and one shot at looking after it. Ask yourself if the product you are thinking of buying is really the very best thing available for your body's needs. You wouldn't eat something potentially harmful, so why would you rub sub-standard products into your skin?
Cheap, ineffective products are at best a false economy, with low active ingredient levels causing you to get through pot's and pot's of the stuff. A little goes a long way with products that have high concentrations of the active ingredient, meaning that you need to buy them much less frequently and in the long run spend less money on them!
These principles can be applied to most beauty buying from make-up & skincare to vitamins & supplements so don't just consider your pocket, your health is a long term investment and is worth the spend.
