I never heard of this until today, and this site has possibly the best description, or just google "certainty of fate".
The Cheque Clearance Cycle : http://www.smile.co.uk/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=Smile/Page/smView&cid=1191913032578
I thought 3-4 days to clear a cheque. Oh no, the banks have other ideas. Yes they go up and down dale through the clearance houses, but even when the cheque is in your account - it isn't ! It can still bounce, even though your bank have told you it's cleared. So add the 3/4 Working days of individual banks, then + Certainty of days = average 10 days, before the money is truly yours and can't be recalled.
And dont forget to add post days on top of that. Next time you send a seller a cheque payment, think on !
