It’s almost party season (woo hoo!), which means it’s time to figure out which party gang you’re going to be in. If you’re bored of succumbing to the lure of the classic LBD, take inspiration from our guide.

There are a so many ways to win at party style, with countless trends to choose from – many of which are perfect for showcasing incredible curves. You’d be crazy not to try one out…

1. ’80s Angel

They called it the decade that style forgot, but fashion’s finest must disagree because the ’80s are officially hip again. That’s doesn’t mean we’re condoning a top-to-toe shell suit and Dallas-style blusher. Instead, this new take on the ’80s is all about the glamour.

You can thank those design geniuses at YSL for the throwback feels. Their AW ’16 catwalk was a veritable party of disco foil textures, mega mini dresses and the biggest shoulders. For a similar look, search out a sassy cocktail dress, then add a belt to cinch the waist.

Footwear is a super easy way to dip into this trend. Look for shoes with cone-shaped heels, slouchy leather knee boots and, of course, a pair of clean white stilettos.

2. Metallic Minx

It wouldn’t be party season without an influx of gleaming metallics to kick things off. On the catwalks, Maven and Opening Ceremony swathed mod bods in layers of traditional silver and gold, with jewel shades like emerald, fuchsia and sapphire popping up on occasion.

The most fun way to do metals is to clash shades. It’s definitely one for the brave, but a look that will guarantee you’re at the centre of any party.

If you’re the proud owner of a booty that would make Holly Willoughby jealous, slip into a metallic pencil skirt and get your wiggle on! Remember to pack your shapewear pants to keep your hips and thighs smooth – and bump free!

3. Velvet Vixen

The most wearable of all party trends, velvet dresses are something you can legitimately wear day-to-night. In one of the most lusted-after outfits of AW ’16, Valentino teamed its ochre velvet cami dress with an uber-fine roll neck for a modern take on the retro trend.

Curvy girls should go up at least a size on anything slouchy, then use extras like robe belts to add shape. Layering a thin top under a sleeveless velvet dress is a good way to cover up without foregoing your favourite frock.

However, avoid anything that blends Lycra with velvet. Overly stretched velvet will pucker and cause unflattering bumps.

4. Miss Havisham

Remember that fabulous but nutty lady in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations? Well, she was all the rage for AW ’16. Miss Havisham chic (or Granny’s Attic, as some called it) takes granny-like geek chic and gives it a modern party twist.

If you’re keen to sample this quirky trend, try mixing nan-appropriate tweed with sparkling sequins. A cute blazer will give a fuller figure shape and help to nip the waist in, then slip a luxe blouse or cami under to clash textures. Go for a V-neck or sweetheart neckline to show skin and draw the eye to the décolletage.

Alternatively pick up a midi length tea dress, then accessorise like a fashion editor. A metallic belt, masses of glittering brooches and OTT embellished bags all help to add a heap of glam to an everyday dress.

Top tip: Avoid anything fussy and high-necked. It will only look matronly on a generous bust. Instead, grab a dress with a V-shaped neckline or one that unbuttons. A V-neckline will draw the eye in and down, slimming the torso.

Sequins, sequins, sequins! We love a good sequined look. Be it small ones that sparkle like the night sky, or big fat circular ones that shimmy when we shake: Sequins are IT for party season. That will never change.

Pear shaped gals should wear darker shades on their bottom halves (we’re suggesting indigo jeans, black trousers) and then go wild with sparkle on top – cleverly mesmerising anyone who glances your way with your top half.

A faithful way to work this fabulous trend is in dress form. Fuller figures look gorgeous in body skimming sequins. Look for a sparkly frock with T-shirt style sleeves to cover up any upper arm issues and a light plunge neckline. Be sure to slip your trusty contouring undies on to smooth the silhouette, flatten the tummy and perkify the bottom.

We’re also huge fans of a glittering blazer. Throw it on over a simple LBD to raise your game from standard to wow. Not keen on a full-on disco ball look? Add some shine with clever extras. Sequined skinny scarves add just the right amount of glitz, as does a popping clutch.
