Choosing the right whipped cream chargers

The world of whipped cream chargers can get very confusing, with so many to choose from and so many options available 8 gram, 16 gram, Pharmaceutical nitrous oxide, food grade pure nitrous oxide what does it all mean? And which one is right for you and your needs? There are many questions associated with choosing the right whipped cream charger.

Due to the increased popularity of nitrous oxide cream chargers for making whipped cream and being used for other applications there are a variety of brands being marketed in the United Kingdom and Europe. There are essentially three nitrous oxide consumer charger manufacturers in the world. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has emerged as the largest, along with the Hungarian Company Liss and Kayser in the Czech Republic. Listed below are some of the brands currently being marketed to the European market. I am reviewing some of the top brands to assist you in determining what is appropriate for your needs. I hope this outline will help you better understand which whip cream charger is right for you.

There are two categories of nitrous oxide food grade and pharmaceutical, pharmaceutical grade nitrous oxide is for use in the medical industry and food grade nitrous oxide is for use in the catering industry. All of the following brands of cream charger are in the food grade pure nitrous oxide category.

Liss cream chargers
Liss are a leading cartridge manufacturer. Liss has a strong tradition and experience in manufacturing gas cylinders, soda siphons, and cream whippers. Liss cream chargers are manufactured in Hungry. The chargers are Made of recyclable steel and painted in a grey colour to prevent rust. The Liss chargers are a cheaper brand when compared with other brands of chargers, but are manufactured to a high quality and standard with no duds. In my opinion Liss are great brand of chargers for a great price and one of my favourites.

Kayser cream chargers
Kayser started producing pressurised gas cylinders (soda and cream chargers), soda siphons and cream whippers as early as the late 1950s. Kayser are manufactured in Czech Republic. The chargers are Made of recyclable steel and silver in colour. As with the Liss chargers the Kayser chargers are a cheaper brand compared with other brands currently available. I have fully tested these chargers and have found them to be of a very high quality with no duds and with no oily residue left behind with repeated use. I would not hesitate in recommending this product.

Whip it cream chargers
Whip it cream whippers and charger systems were invented by Whip-It in Switzerland in 1950's. Whip-It Brand whippers and chargers reflect over 60 years of manufacturing expertise and the brand name is synonymous with the "cream charger" product category itself. Original branded Whip It chargers were Manufactured by Kisag's Switzerland factory which closed in 2001. Some production reported in Taiwan (Mosa), however most production is in Hungary. The chargers are Made of recyclable steel and are painted blue in colour. In my opinion a good all round product.

Best whip (Mosa) cream chargers
Branded by Bestwhip recyclable anodized steel chargers, silver in colour. Available in both 8 gram and 16 gram sizes. They are manufactured in Republic of China (Taiwan). Bestwhip advertises that they manufacture this brand the actual manufacture is Mosa. I have tested these chargers in both sizes 8 g and 16 g on many occasions with no duds so far and I have found them to be a good brand of charger for a reasonable price.

Mr creamy cream chargers
Mr creamy are manufactured in Republic of China (Taiwan) by the Mosa Brand, primarily marketed in USA now being sold to UK consumers. They are the same quality as the Best whip chargers reviewed above, but only available in the 8g size.

There are two different sizes of whipped cream charger available - 8 gram and 16 gram.

The 8 g size charger is only to be used in the 8 g size dispenser and should be clearly labelled. The 8 g charger when used with a 1/4 Litre dispenser will produce enough nitrous oxide when mixed with 1 cup of heavy whipping cream (filled half way) to yield approximately 2.5 pints (in volume) of finished whipped cream. Please note no more than one 8 g charger should be used in the 1/4 Litre size dispenser at the same time due to the pressure and if this amount is exceeded there is a risk of explosion.

The 8 g size charger when used with a 1/2 Litre dispenser will produce enough nitrous oxide when mixed with 2 cups of heavy whipping cream (filled half way) to yield approximately 5 pints (in volume) of finished whipped cream. Please note no more than two 8 g chargers should be used in the 1/2 Litre size dispenser at the same time due to the pressure and if this amount is exceeded there is a risk of explosion.

The 16 g size charger is double the size of the 8 g charger and produces double the amount of nitrous oxide gas. This should only be used with a 16 g size dispenser and should be clearly labelled. The 16 g charger when used with a 1 Litre dispenser will produce enough nitrous oxide when mixed 4 cups of heavy whipping cream (filled half way) to yield approximately 10 pints (in volume) of finished whipped cream. Please note no more than two 16 g chargers should be used in the 1 Litre size dispenser at the same time due to the pressure and if this amount is exceeded there is a risk of explosion.
