In the space of just a few short weeks, the smartphone game Pokémon Go has completely taken over the planet and become an unstoppable social phenomenon. The most talked-about game of the decade has got millions of us taking to the streets in search of elusive Pokémon to capture, train and send into battle – we're all hopelessly addicted and absolutely loving it.

With the success of Pokémon Go, 'augmented reality' - where we use a screen to see virtual stuff overlaid onto the real world - has finally gone mainstream. It's taken the arrival of Nintendo's little monsters to make us all get it. And now that we do, what's next?

Well, we'd like to see this immersive gaming experience being applied to some other classic franchises. Make it happen, video game developers!

Space Invaders

Imagine that, instead of zapping Space Invaders by zipping left then right, then left again along the bottom of a screen, you could blast them by pointing your phone up at the night sky and picking them off as they descend down onto you from the stars above.

Granted, doctors surgeries would likely be inundated with players suffering from cricked 'Space Invaders neck', but maybe some kind of brace could be worn by players during extended gaming sessions? We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, anyway.

Tetris

Classic falling-brick puzzler Tetris is one of the most addictive games of all time – but imagine how much more addictive it would be if you had to go outside and find each brick, instead of  having them scroll down the screen into your waiting pile.

“Yeeess!” – you find a long straight brick by the bins round the back of the supermarket. “Noooo!” – you get an awkward square brick in the public loos at the park. “Woo-hoooo!” – an L-shaped brick, just what you needed, at your cousin's wedding, right next to the bride as she watches the best man's speech. “Get in there you beauty!”

Pac-Man

Nothing is quite as panic-inducing as being closely pursued by an angry ghost in Pac-Man – and nothing is quite as a satisfying as chomping down a power pill and then immediately turning the tables on your supernatural pursuer by devouring it. Ha! Take that, ghosty!

But instead of these pixelated dramas unfolding in an on-screen maze, what if they took place on the bustling, real-life streets of your nearest city? Imagine barging pedestrians out of the way as you run screaming from a ghost that suddenly appears on your phone screen, racing towards you down the pavement. “Out of the way, everyone!”, you'll screech. “I need to eat a power pill or I'll diiiiee!” Sure enough, people will almost certainly give you a wide berth.

Grand Theft Auto

The most controversial gaming series of all time, Grand Theft Auto is begging for a Pokémon Go-style makeover. Imagine rolling around the less salubrious areas of your town, collecting sketchy criminal types to train and then battle with others. You simply point your phone at any and every dubious-looking person you come across, and ping! They're all yours.

Don't be shy now, just march right up and throw that GTA Pokéball at them by swiping your phone screen. Shoplifters, gangsters, car thieves – gotta collect 'em all!

Super Mario Kart

Driving a car can be a bit tedious, right? Accelerate, break, signal, manoeuvre, blah de blah, yawn. But! What if you could hold your phone up in front of your face as you drive around and watch as boring old reality gets a Super Mario Kart makeover?

That Ford Escort pulling up at the lights becomes Bowser, careening along in his kart. Quick! Blast him with a shell! That Vauxhall Corsa merging onto the motorway becomes a giggling Princess Peach. Overtake her! Overtake her! That police car with its sirens wailing behind you becomes... oh wait, that is actually a police car. Better pull over. Still. Fun while it lasted! Or maybe just better played on the Go-Kart tracks rather than the M25.

Resident Evil

Survival-horror game Resident Evil is scary enough when you're playing at home on your TV screen. But if its nightmarish cast of mutated zombies was to start bleeding into everyday life and the outside world, well, that'd be outright pant-wetting. (And also awesome, very, very awesome.)

Picture the scene: You're out doing the weekly big shop. You hold your phone aloft in the shampoo aisle – and there, shambling towards you, is a horrific man-spider abomination!

Screaming like a banshee, you swipe at the shelves in a blind panic, sending hundreds of bottles of shampoo clattering onto the floor and into the path of the oncoming monster. Having bought yourself a few seconds, you abandon your trolley and run out of the supermarket as fast as your legs will carry you, howling panicked warnings to other shoppers as you go. "Run, you fools! Man-spider, man-spider!"
