How Monitor Stands Work - VESA sizes explained and more!

All mountable monitors have a pattern of four screw holes in the back of the unit. The monitor stands work by attaching a bracket to these screw holes which holds the monitor. The vast majority of monitors follow the standardised VESA format. Most monitors will have VESA 75 or 100 holes. All our brackets support this format and some also work with the smaller VESA 50 size.

The VESA size is measure as the distance between the mounting holes horizontally x vertically in mm. So if the spacing between the holes measures 100 x 100mm then you have a VESA 100 monitor. It worth checking this before you purchase a monitor stand as occasionally some monitors may have unusually spaced holes or in fact no holes at all.

It is also important to check the weight of your monitor. Monitor stands will have maximum weights they can support and you need to make sure that you select a stand that is suitable.

You also need to look at the dimensions of the stand and check this against your monitors. This is especially important for a multi monitor setup. If you want to mount two monitors side by side you need to check that your monitors are within the size parameters specified for this to work. Also you might need to check if you can raise the monitor to the desired height using the stand. Checking that the stand will measure up to your requirements can save you a big headache later on. You can normally find all the required information on your monitor at the manufacturers website.

Different types of desk attachments

One of the first things you need to consider is how you want to attach the monitor stand to the desk. There are three different types of attachments; desktop base stands, desk clamps and grommet mounts. Each has their own advantages and is suitable for different situations.

Desktop Base Stands

The most basic type of stand is the table stand. This type of stand just rests on top of your desk. In order to support one or more monitors properly the stand base needs to be quite large. Our MMS0 series stands have bases that measure 47.4 x 29.2 cm. This is the one disadvantage of the type of stand, you need to make sure you have enough desk space to accommodate the base.

The table stand is great when you have a desk that you cannot attach a clamp to. Some desks don’t have the right type of edge to attach a clamp to or it is not practical in the desk’s location. If this is the case then a table stand s a good solution. Also the table stand can more easily be moved around to a different desk if need be.

We have table stands for one and two monitors available in the MMS0 and MMS1 series. You can see the currently available products from this range on our eBay shop here.

Desk Clamp Stands

The desk clamp is probably the most popular type of fitting. This works by fitting around the edge at the back of the desk and clamping on tightly ensuring a solid connection without any need to modify the desk. Using a desk clamp will save you lots of space as you won’t have a large stand base cluttering up the desk. If you have a large desk you may find that some stands with shorter arms are a little bit far away from you. In this case you may find one of the other attachments more suitable or you might need to purchase an additional arm section for your stand.

We have desk clamp stands for one to four monitors available in the GSA, GSD, MDM1 and MDM0 series. Take a look at some of our top desk mount stands on eBay here.

Grommet Mount Stand

The grommet mount fitting works by attaching the stand to a hole drilled through the desk. You need to drill a small hole, then bolt the stand to the desk secured through the hole.

This system is great as it allows you to position the stand exactly where you want rather than having to attach right at the edge. Unfortunately you will need to drill a small hole in your desk so maybe reconsider if you have an antique!

It is however a great option for anyone with a desk that won’t work with a clamp. You will still get the useful space saving benefits of the desk clamp but it will work with most desks unsuitable for using the clamp.

How many monitors?

We have monitor stands for setups between 1 – 4 monitors. If you need something different please do get in touch and we will do our best to assist you. The MMS type stands are available in dual and single variants. The MDM1 stands are available in single, dual and quad types. The MDM0 stands come in single, dual, triple and quad types. Both our gas spring series stands, the GSA and GSD series, come in single and dual variants.

Whilst it is not normally advisable to mount more than 4 monitors from one pole, we can advise on multi pole setups if you need to mount more screens. We can also advise if you need a more unusual configuration such as a three monitor setup with one screen above the other two. We have longer 70cm and 100cm pole available for most models if you need extra height.

Types of Arms - Fixed Arms vs Gas Spring Arms

Once you have decided what sort of monitor stand attachment you will be using you need to look at the type of arms needed. We have stands with fixed arms and gas spring arms. The gas spring arms allow you to move the monitors around effortlessly and adjust their position very easily. If you will need to move the monitors around a lot then gas spring arms are a must. Equipped with gas spring technology the arms keep your monitor in position but can be moved with just a light touch. Once you get the monitor where you want it will stay there unaided until you want to move it again.

The fixed arms are suitable for most customers. They don’t have the flexibility of movement that the gas spring arms do but they are available in many more options and are also more affordable. Some of these also support heavier monitors that won’t work with the gas spring type.

It is also worth mentioning a third type of stand that has no arms at all. These basic models such as the MDM01 are all single monitor stands and have the monitor mounted to a bracket connected directly to the central pole.

Gas Spring Options - GSD Series

The GSD series stands come in silver and are available with a number of different options. There are single and dual versions available. You can also choose the angle of the arms. We have diagonal and horizontal options. The diagonal arms will give you a little extra height and the horizontal ones move the monitor out a little further.

The GSD series can attach to the desk via a grommet mount or a desk clamp. You can also purchase a wall plate attachment if you want to wall mount the unit so it gives you ultimate mounting flexibility.

Gas Spring Options - GSA Series

The GSA series stands are in black and come in single, dual (side by side) and dual ‘double decker’ (one on top of the other) formats. These can only be mounted by desk clamp.

All the variants in this range incorporate a central pole onto which the arms are mounted. This allows for greater control over the height of the monitors.

Fixed Arm Options - MMS0 Series

The MMS0 series stands come in black and are a range of table stands that are freestanding on the desk. We have single and dual monitor stands in this range.

The most basic model, the MMS01, is a simple stand with a 40cm central pole and a VESA bracket to attach your monitor. This stand does not come with an arm.

The MMS04 is basically the same as the MMS01 but with an added two section 30cm arm. This means that you can position the monitor away from the pole if needed. If you'd like to have the monitor stand at the back of the desk out the way but with the monitor itself coming forward towards the user then this model is suitable for that.

The MMS05 is the dual monitor stand in this range. It has two of the two section 30 cm arms coming out from the central 40cm pole so you can mount two monitors (up to 60cm wide approx max 24" nominal size) side by side.

Fixed Arm Options - MDM0 Series

The popular MDM0 series stands are essentially desk clamp versions of the MMS0 range but with more options. The come in silver. We have single, dual, triple and quad stands in this series. Single and dual types in the MDMO series can also be attached to the desk using a grommet type mount.

The MDM01 is the most basic model. This a simple 40cm pole with the VESA bracket for attaching a single monitor mounted straight to it. You can still adjust the monitor height by choosing how far up the pole you secure it. A desk clamp or grommet mount can be used to secure this stand.

Similar but with an added two section 30cm arm, the MDM04 is another single stand in this range. The added arm gives you extra control over the monitor positioning. If you will be using the desk clamp (desk clamp and grommet mount fitting supplied) to mount the stand then you will have to secure the stand at the back of the desk. The arm can be used to bring the monitor forward to a more user friendly position whilst still saving loads of desk space underneath and behind the monitor.

The MDM05 is the dual option. It has two of the two section 30cm arms that come out from the central 40cm pole. You can use this stand to mount two monitors side by side. Desk clamp and grommet mounting are both suitable with the MDM05 stand.

Our only triple monitor stand is the MDM06. This stand allows you to mount 3 monitors in a row. It has two arms each measuring 36cm. One monitor is attached to each arm and another to the central pole. In the default supplied configuration this stand is only suitable for monitors up to 36cm wide (approx 16" nominal size) but can be extended by adding two extra 18cm arm sections one to each side. This allow for monitors up to 54cm wide to be used.

The largest model in the range is the MDM07 stand for four monitors. This stand is for mounting four monitors in a square with a two on top two on the bottom configuration. It is supplied with a larger 70cm pole in order to achieve this.
