Couriers Beware of goods in transit insurance scam

All couriers and those who operate other delivery services should beware of an insurance scam that exists.

You might find this strange coming from a bed seller, but we do also offer a delivery service for large bulky items.

We were asked by an ebayer to deliver two items. The first was a rear projection TV, and the second was a fish tank with all the coral and stuff included (quite expensive I believe).

So we collected both items which were very well packed. The seller watched our drivers carefully load them onto the van and secure them both. We delivered the TV at the very next drop, so it hadn't even been moved in the van, and was secured to the side. The fish tank was delivered later in the route.

Then over a week later I got an e-mail from the sell saying that he wanted to claim off our insurance because both items were damaged. At this point I know that many large couriers would just send a claim form out, but I was very suspicous, so started to ask for more details. I also contacted both of the people who we delivered to:

  • The person who we delivered the TV to said that there was no damage at all to the packaging, and that, and that our drivers were very careful with it. When I asked if it was damaged she said that the picture was a bit green, and that the was a bit of a ghost. She also added that they hadn't contacted the seller, but he had actually contacted them after a week, and and appeared confused that they hadn't contacted him about the fault. As soon as he was told what the fault was he said "the couriers must have dropped it and knocked the bulbs out of alignment".
  • The person we delivered the fish tank to said that the glass was very scratched (under the very thick cling film layer), and the paint on the frame was scratched and flaking. He said that there was no damage at all to the packaging, so it must have been caused before it was packed.

So we started to dig deeper asking for for the ebay listings for both items, but we got no response. So we asked the buyers for the listings, and they told us. It then became obvious that the seller had used a different account from the one that we knew him by. When we inspected his feedback we found that quite a few of his items had been faulty, and that he blamed the courier for all of them. What was really worrying was that he was now trying to sell oil paintings for up to £10000 (with extra postal insurance added through Royal Mail).

Obviously I can't give out his ebay ID on here, bu I can tell you that he lives in beware.
