Fiat Grande punto introduced in 2006 (199 chassis) uses a Delphi eps column. The column fitted in the grande punto is a new design completely different to the older punto (188 chassis).

The column/motor/ecu on the grande punto is one integral unit. The motor/ecu does not separate from the column body. If a fault develops anywhere within the electric power steering eps column, then the complete column must be changed.

From 2006 through to September 2008 the grande punto column remains essentially the same the only variant was, models fitted with traction control (fiat call this ASR). This was seen on 1.9 sporting and 1.4 16 valve models.

In order to check on the part number of your grande punto eps column you need to look at your Grande unit…

You will then need to look at the underside of the unit where the electrical connections into the eps column are situated.

You will see a label like this…

The important part number is the one that being Located where the arrow is indicating, beginning with

DWG FIAT: and the either 55701323 OR 55704064 for all standard Grande punto models these are both interchangeable.

OR 55703373 this is the 7wire column unit fitted to the vehicles with ASR , typically 1.9 sporting and 1.4 16 valve models.

The main reason for failure of the eps column on the grande punto is the torque position sensor failing, this can result in a groaning vibration when turning the steering wheel which will eventually lead to the steering failure light/ message illuminating on the dash display.

The EPS motor/control unit can also fail sometimes intermittently whereby the steering will work some times and not work at other times.

For either of these types of failures the complete eps column will need to be replaced. Our range of remanufactured exchange EPS columns for the punto are rebuilt to the highest standards and we use some heavier duty components in the rebuild to ensure that we do not see repeat failures for the faults described the columns also come with the peace of mind with a lifetime warranty.
