Fishing Reels from China

Tempted by a realy cheap reel??    How about a seafishing multiplier for less than a quid??

There are several guides in various categories warning aganst buying expensive or hi-tech gear from China.  It appears there is a huge industry knocking out fake or copies of all sorts of stuff and selling them at an unbelievably low price.

I was looking for a new real and found one (well hundreds really) for 99p.  Even with postage from the far east the total was less than £6 so I thought it was worth a go.  I was not expecting much for that money and when it arrived I found out why.

The 'reel' itself looked quite good in the photograph but when it arrived I discovered it was about 1.5 inches across.  It was tiny. The quality had to be seen to be believed.  The seat fittings were punched out of sheet metal that was so thin I could bend it just with my hands, likewise the handle.  All the fixings were mild steel, not chrome or stainless and there was no clutch.  The spool has no bearings, the ends of the shaft just run in the outer casings and would probably last a matter of seconds if you were foolish enough to actually attach it to a rod and try to use it.  Overall the reel is far far worse than the ones you used to be able to get from Woolworths forty years ago as part of a fishing starter pack for 5/6 (showing my age now).

Bottom line is that a decent reel contains a large number of precision made parts; the tooling to set up costs thousands of pounds.  That is why reels are so expensive.  All parts have to be able to endure constant wetting and drying out in salt water so are made from non corrosive metals or are plated with chrome.  There is no way in the world that it is possible to make a usable fishing reel and sell it for £1. My reel even had line fitted when it arrived - does anyone know where you can buy a spool of monofilament fishing line for £1??

Once again the expression that springs to mind is - If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

If anybody is still in any doubt about these 'bargain' Chinese reels feel free to e-mail me and I will send you mine for the cost of the postage.
