From the Runway to Real Life:
You don’t need to be a fashion blogger or a supermodel to be on-trend, yet the runways can feel far beyond the reality of an everyday wardrobe. And it’s not just the high cost of couture or the unreal models wearing the clothes that leave most people wondering how on earth the runway trends can be incorporated into an average person’s closet. It’s also not easy to understand how you could style these items to make them feel like YOU belong in them. So with that in mind, here are five trends for Autumn that I think most everyone can model with confidence:
#1) Geek Chic
You don’t have to be a bookworm to achieve the kooky-cool looks that were all over the Fall runways. Here are some key accessories that can add just the right nerdy touch without breaking the bank.
Vintage (or new) “geek” glasses:
You can call me four eyes, but I think a pair of geeky glasses are a quick way to reinvent yourself. The graphic shape and that nerd appeal delivers a fresh and modern outlook on everything you pair with them. In my book, black is always a good idea but if you already own a pair, go for the new on trend tortoise shell that was seen on the Gucci runway.
The quintessential french beret
You don’t have to be in a Wes Anderson film to wear a beret, but if you do sport one of these classic chic chapeaus you may look as if you’re on your way toMoonrise Kingdom.
Classic and classy, this shoe will update any of your existing fall duds. You may be thinking that loafers are too preppy for your taste but once you slip one of these babies on you will be walking not only in comfort but in style.
#2) Borrowed From the Boys
I’m a sucker for good tailoring and I also believe there is really nothing chicer than a woman in a sleek suit. It exudes confidence. Menswear patterns also took center stage but when paired with a soft feminine blouse these menswear pieces are all female!
The sexy suit
As seen on the runways, the two-piece pant suit is back, but this is not your boyfriend's suit. A great suit is tailored just right to show off your feminine side. But if it feels too “buttoned up” for you, just pair a tuxedo blazer with your favourite jeans or leather pants, a feminine blouse, and some power heels, and you will be turning heads!
The feminine touch
Menswear looks can always benefit from a shot of feminine appeal. As seen on the Prada runway, adding an oversized graphic floral brooch injects femininity. Or add a fur collar for a touch of softness.
#3) Skins and Suedes
You do not need to fully embrace the ‘70s to be on trend for Fall. Just add an item of suede to your existing wardrobe. Pieced, patched, fringed or colored, suede will stand out against your sea of black leather coats!
Suede or pieced leather accessories
It's truly all in the details and I have always preferred my black moto jacket to any ‘70s-inspired coat. If you’re like me, you can simply swap out your classic leather accessories for their suede counterpart. Try a pair suede Charles Jordan pumps (if you want to be of that era!) or a solid coloured suede boot. If you really want to go for the 70's vibe try a pieced leather clutch but pair it with a simple outfit and let it be the focal point . Suede and pieced leather accessories add an instant touch of cool to the most basic of looks, but you won’t look (or risk) feeling like a reject from That ‘70s Show.
Get your texture on by adding something furry and soft to your existing Fall wardrobe. Against even vintage fur? Faux fur feel too...faux? No problem, Velvet will add the perfect touch of luxe instead!
Fun with fur
We all know a fur can make an ultimate "night out on the town" topper but it can also be worn in so many other ways. Wear a fur stole belted over a vintage evening dress for an added touch of glamour or pin it (with a brooch) on your favorite menswear inspired coats. Take it down a notch by simply throwing on a fur over your shoulders with your favorite pair of jeans and a tee. However you add these sumptuous textures to your existing wardrobe you will inject a dose of fun glamour and be right on trend for Fall! Be on trend with the latest in women's fashion.
Velvet is back in a big way this fall. It's perfect for not only adding a "come hither" texture to your wardrobe but also enables you to add rich saturated colors like reds, plums, cordovans and my favorite, navy velvet, to add depth to your wardrobe. Find a great fitting blazer or trouser in velvet and you have an instant wardrobe update!
#5) Shine it On
You don’t need to be a disco dancer to enjoy sparkle. Lurex, sequins and metallics boogied their way down the runways this Fall. All it takes is a little confidence to step outside your fashion comfort zone (and maybe a glass of good champagne)!
Adding one eye-candy sequin piece to your Fall wardrobe is a great way treat yourself and it can take your wardrobe to a whole other level…and just think how much fun you will have on that dance floor!
Silver and gold and everything in between were glinting across the runway this Fall. Not ready to shimmy into an allover sparkly number? Opt for a metallic shoe or handbag as it will still pack a glitzy punch. Step out of your comfort zone. Try something new because your closet will thank you. Now ladies...go hit the dance floor!
