Useful Bits

Whilst sorting through some GT cars to put up for auction I found bits of an orange FLY Saleen. I remembered enjoying the car but could not recall why it had been dismantled and neglected. Maybe I had needed some parts for another car.....

Preparation

First thing I needed to do was see what bits I still had and whether or not those bits could be salvaged and made good.

Looks like a pleasant enough way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Working motor and drive. Cool.

A good Clean

Cotton wool buds, wet wipes, tyre conditioner, a drop of engine oil soon led to a shiny, operational chassis and a working motor. One of the key features of the model was visible engine detail through the rear window. The engine was missing but I had a load of bits....

A "Bitsa" Engine

So a rummage through the spares box, a bit of this and a bit of that.....a dab of glue....it started to take shape. It was useful I had two other Saleens to look at for reference.

They'll never know....

Wahaay! Looks pretty good. No idea if all the parts are right but it looks groovy enough. Thankfully it's role is only cosmetic but, all the same, needs to look the part.

Exhausting....

Twin exhaust pipes? Well of course. I'd say this is beginning to take shape. Bodywork has polished up a treat.

On Reflection

Hmmmmm we're not going to get away with his gnarled up mirror off another LM car. But with a bit of sanding, some clay and a paint match......

Mirror Image

First coat....close. Still needs work, a little sanding down, another coat and maybe a coat of varnish. Now we're talking. Not that we'll need mirrors - nothing is going to catch this Saleen.

Used Car, One Careful Owner

Looks like a Saleen and, a stroke of luck, the engine pulls a mighty result on the test bed - over 7000 rpm. Amazing. The car is not only shiny and restored it goes like the wind. Now all I need is to photograph it on track and see if one of you would like to add it to your collection.....one careful owner :)
