DIY gifts for a loved one

If the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, you could do worse than make a foodie gift for your beloved. One idea that’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser is to bake some homemade biscuits and package them in a heart-shaped gift box.

Or you could give them some homemade sweets in a glass Kilner jar, with a romantic message written on a brown tag. That way your loved one can reuse the jar once they’ve polished off the brownies.

Other great foodie gift ideas include homemade pickles or jam. Cookies, gourmet marshmallows and granola also go down well – these look super-stylish packaged in cellophane bags tied with a ribbon. Or if your loved one has more savoury tastes, you can try making flavoured vodkas or chilli oil, which you can put in vintage bottles.

Handmade gifts for a best pal

Some of the best beauty products are created by hand, and you don’t need any special training to make them yourself. Bath salts, for example, are easy to make at home. Simply stock up on Epsom salts, which you can then mix with your favourite essential oils.

Body scrubs, too, are a cinch to make yourself. Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett– who you’d think could afford a designer body scrub or two – makes her own using grapefruit juice, sea salt and olive oil.

You can also make your own face masks using products from the kitchen, like yoghurt, porridge oats, avocado or fresh fruit. Similarly olive oil and coconut oil make the base of a great hair mask. These homemade versions are as effective as expensive shop-bought masks, but avoid the chemical nasties you find in mass-produced beauty products.

Meanwhile, if your friend isn’t into beauty products, what about a piece of handmade jewellery, or a lavender bag? You don’t have to be great at sewing, though if you’re handy with a needle, you could always embroider it with his or her name.

And if you can knit, that opens up a whole world of stylish handmade gifts. Scarves, tea cosies, mittens, jumpers – your friends will love them all as handmade knitwear is so expensive in the shops.

Handmade gifts for parents

For a truly personal gift, what about printing off some of your favourite photos and compiling them in a handmade album? Hardly anyone gets around to printing their photos these days, so they’ll be over the moon. You can then personalise the album with your family’s initials, or with pictures that mean something to them.

The past few years have seen crafting come back into fashion in a big way, and there are some great ideas for handmade craft presents.

Handmade gifts to say thank you

Scented candles and soaps are a lovely way to say thank you, as they’re the sort of thing people like to have but don’t necessarily buy themselves. It isn’t as hard as it sounds, either.

You can buy your own candle-making kit, containing all the tools you need, along with all the instructions.

You can also buy more basic kits that include soya wax and moulds, or you can buy your own DIY soap-making kits. These include everything from fragrance oils and colours to petals and seeds to put inside your soaps.

All the kits are ideal for beginners, so you’ve no excuse – start getting creative!
