HELP IN SPOTTING RESTORED PIECES OF BESWICK.

IT IS NOT ALWAYS OBVIOUS TO BUYERS IF A PIECE THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED HAS HAD RESTORATION OR NOT. IT MIGHT BE ARGUED THAT IF THEY CAN NOT FIND THE RESTORED AREAS THEN WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?? AS FAR AS THEY ARE CONCERNED THEY HAVE A PERFECT PIECE AT A PRICE THEY WERE WILLING TO PAY. MOST SELLERS WILL ALSO BE UNAWARE THEY HAVE SOLD A RESTORED PIECE AND WILL NO DOUBT REFUND YOUR MONEY ON RETURN OF SAID PIECE.

HOWEVER, THERE ARE SOME SELLERS OUT THERE THAT I AM SURE ARE AWARE OF THE RESTORATION BUT BECAUSE IT IS WELL DONE, THEY HOPE IT WILL BE MISSED BY THE PURCHASER.

HAVING RECENTLY PURCHASED A BESWICK HORSE FOR MY LARGE COLLECTION, I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE SPEED IT ARRIVED AND HOW WELL PACKED IT WAS. JUST AS I WAS ADDING IT TO THE DISPLAY CABINET THE EARS CAUGHT IN THE NATURAL LIGHT, AND ONE OF THE TWO SHOWED A DARKER GLOSS TO IT. ON CLOSE INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE EAR HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND RE-PAINTED/GLAZED. USING A MAGNIFYING GLASS THE REPAIR SHOWED UP OBVIOUSLY. USING THE GLASS ON THE OTHER EXTREMITIES MOST LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN BROKEN AT SOME TIME I FOUND A VERY GOOD PIECE OF RESTORATION TO BOTH FRONT LEGS!! THEY HAD BEEN OFF AT SOME TIME BUT RESTORED. THE REPAIRED AREAS HAD BEEN AIR-BRUSHED OR SPRAYED WITH ALMOST THE EXACT PALOMINO GLOSS COLOUR. HOWEVER I HAD SPOTTED SPRAY DOTS OF THE SAME COLOUR TO THE HORSES WHITE SOCKS, AND THE GLOSS IN THE AREA WAS UNEVENLY APPLIED. IT WAS ALSO ROUGHER TO THE TOUCH THAN THE REST OF THE LEGS. BESWICK PAINTERS DID NOT USE AIRBRUSHES OR SPRAY CANS!!

I CONTACTED THE BUYER (NAME WITHELD), AND WAS GIVEN AN IMMEDIATE REFUND INCLUDING RETURN POSTAGE COSTS. STRANGE I THOUGHT, WHY SO EAGER TO REFUND WITHOUT CHECKING THE HORSE THEMSELVES??  NORMALLY I WOULD HAVE TO RETURN A PIECE AND WAIT FOR REFUND ETC!!

THIS GOT ME THINKING, AND I CHECKED THE SELLERS CURRENT ITEMS FOR SALE. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF CERAMIC PIECES, MOSTLY EXPENSIVE, BUT WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE WAS THE RARITY AND BOOK PRICE OF THE BESWICK HORSE AND ANIMAL MODELS. ONE IN PARTICULAR THAT HE WAS SELLING CAUGHT MY EYE AS I HAVE NOT SEEN IT ON EBAY FOR WELL OVER 1.5 YEARS!! - (A COLIN MELBOURNE SERIES 1 LARGE BULL (IN PERFECT CONDITION). I REMEMBERED SEEING A DAMAGED SAME MODEL BACK IN JULY THIS YEAR BEING SOLD BY A DIFFERENT PERSON). HOWEVER, THIS BULL WAS BEING SOLD AS GUARANTEED NO RESTORATION OR DAMAGE ETC. I THEN CHECKED WHAT THIS PERSON HAD BOUGHT RECENTLY. (YOU CAN ONLY CHECK BACK 90 DAYS FROM FEEDBACK). SUPRISE SUPRISE I FIND AN EXACT SAME MODEL THAT HE PURCHASED AS DAMAGED BUT RESTORABLE BACK IN JULY THIS YEAR  - THE SAME ONE THAT I HAD REMEMBERED SEEING. THE ONLY REASON I COULD FIND THIS INFO. WAS THAT THE ORIGINAL SELLER DID NOT LEAVE FEEDBACK UNTILL LATE AUGUST - WITHIN THE 90 DAY GAP.

BIG CO-INCIDENCE I THOUGHT!   ESPECIALLY AS THIS SAME CHAP WAS ADVERTISING THAT HE WAS A PROFESSIONAL CERAMIC RESTORER, AND EVERY NOW AND THEN HE GETS A PERFECT UNRESTORED PIECE TO SELL!!  IN FACT THE VAST MAJORITY OF HIS AUCTIONS ARE FOR 'GUARANTEED UNRESTORED PIECES'

THERE WILL NOW FOLLOW A NUMBER OF POINTERS TO HELP THE BESWICK COLLECTOR OF HORSES ETC, SPOT IF A RECENT PURCHASE OF A ' PERFECT ' ITEM, HAS IN FACT BEEEN RESTORED.

1. ALWAYS CHECK IN NATURAL AND UNATURAL LIGHT FOR DEFECTS OR ANNOMALIES.

2. CHECK ALL EXTREMITIES - IE LEGS , EARS , TAIL VERY CLOSELY. USE YOUR EYES AND FINGERS TO DETECT ANY PROBLEMS. ANY ROUGH FEELING AREAS, CHECK WITH MAGNIFIER FOR OVER PAINT OR SPRAY.

3. CHECK AREAS WHERE TWO COLOURS OVERLAP OR JOIN. YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SPRAY DOTS OR COLOUR DIFFERENCES. THESE MAY BE VERY SMALL, AND USE OF MAGNIFIER IS HELPFUL.

4. A HORSES EARS SHOULD BOTH BE SAME SIZE - IF ONE IS SMALLER IT WILL HAVE BEEN FILED DOWN TO HIDE CHIPPED OR MISSING TIP. IT WILL THEN HAVE BEEN RE GLAZED OR PAINTED.

5. IF YOU HAVE A U.V OR 'BLACK' LIGHT, USE IT! THESE LIGHTS HELP SHOW UP JOINS ETC IN THE DARK!

6. LISTEN TO THE 'RING' OF ALL FOUR LEGS - A DULL SOUND COMPARED TO THE OTHER LEGS INDICATES A POSSIBLE REPAIR.

7. BE SUSPICIOUS ALWAYS! ESPECIALLY IF THE SELLER IS ADVERTISING THE FACT HE RESTORES CERAMICS! ALWAYS CHECK FEEDBACK, AND IF POSSIBLE FROM THE FEEDBACK CHECK IF HE HAS BEEN BUYING DAMAGED ITEMS. SEE WHAT ELSE HE IS SELLING - TOO MANY 'PERFECT' SEEMINGLY RARER OR HIGHER PRICED ITEMS SHOULD RING A WARNING BELL. THESE MAY WELL BE GENUINE, BUT IT IS ALWAYS WISE TO ASK THE SELLER QUESTIONS ETC. AFTER ALL THIS AND IF YOU STILL WIN THE ITEM, MAKE SURE RETURNS ARE OFFERED JUST IN CASE YOU DETECT RESTORATION!

8. BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING FROM SELLERS THAT 'HIDE' FEEDBACK OR ITEM DETAILS. UNLESS THE ITEM IS OF A SENSATIVE NATURE, THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON TO HIDE WHAT THEY ARE SELLING. I HAVE DISCOVERED SELLERS THAT DO THIS TO HIDE THE FACT THEY BOUGHT THE SAME ITEM DAMAGED, AND THEN RESTORED IT AND SOLD AS PERFECT!!

Well i hope this helps at least a few people. Good luck with your purchases.
