Suggestions for applying Diamante Trim to Cakes
So you have decided that you would like to embellish your cake with some Diamante Trim (Also known as Diamante Chain, Diamante Band or Diamante Ribbon).

So How Do I Adhere the Trim to my Cake?
There are several ways that this can be done according to your preference. Your diamante trim can be adhered to your cake with Royal icing, edible glue, by being stuck first onto a ribbon or held in-place with a jewellers pin.
How Much Diamante Trim Would I Need For My Cake?
How much diamante trim you will need will depend on the shape and size of your cake tiers. Below are two formulas, One for round cakes and another for square cakes to help you work out an estimate of how much trim you may need. Below are examples for each of the formulas.

Formulas With Examples:
  • Round Cakes

1.The formula you need to find the circumference of your cake (distance around the cake) will be:3.14 x Diameter.

Example:

Tier          Diameter x 3.14    =   Amount of Trim Required

Tier 1       14 inch tier x 3.14 =    43.96 inches (Round up to 44 inches)

Tier 2       10 inch tier x 3.14 =    31.40 inches (Round up to 32 inches)

Tier 3         6 inch tier x 3.14 =    18.84 inches (Round up to 19 inches)

2. Next add together the total amount of trim required for all of the tiers.

E.g. 44 + 32 + 19 = 95 inches.

3. To work out the number of yards of trim required for the cake, we now divide the total number by 36 and round up the answer.

E.g. 95 divided by 36 = 2.64 yards of trim. Round this up to 3 yards

  • Square Cakes

1. The formula you need to find the perimeter (measurement around the outside) of your square cake is: Perimeter = length x 2 + width x 2.

Example

Tier           Length          x 2       +       Width x 2                  = Amount of Trim

Tier 1       14 inches x2 =28        +       14 inches x 2=28      = 56 inches.

Tier 2       10 inches x 2 =20       +       10 inches x 2=20      = 40 inches.

Tier 3        6 inches x 2 = 12       +       6 inches x 2= 12       = 12 inches.

2. Next add together the total amount of trim required for all of the tiers.

E.g. 56 + 40 + 24 = 120 inches.

3. To work out the number of yards of trim required for the cake, we now divide the total number by 36 and round up the answer.

E.g. 120 divided by 36 = 3.33 yards of trim. Round this up to 4 yards.
**Recommendations**
We advise rounding up your calculations to allow a little extra when affixing your diamante trim to your cake. If your final calculations come to a round number, without rounding up, we would recommend that you purchase an extra yard to account for any inaccuracies in the cutting of the diamante trim or the making of the cake.

The diamante rhinestones can be purchased in different sizes, although 3mm stones tend to be the most popular size for cake decorating. Grade A Quality stones are also recommended for lots of sparkle!
