How To Identify UK Vertigo Swirl 1st Pressings - part 3
Version 3 - small swirl above spindle, VERTIGO below swirl above spindle
From around Spring 1971 onwards, the label design now follows that seen above on 029, 032, 037. As well as the smaller swirl and VERTIGO moving, the publishing date has also moved to below the 33 1/3. This design is consistent from 041 to 066 inclusive:

From early 1972 onwards a slight variation of label design again; a different typeface and the publishing date has reverted back to above the 33 1/3,plus the catalogue number has moved up above the A side track listing. This design seems to interweave with Version 3 until the last ever UK Vertigo swirl...

This should have label version 2 - am trying to track one down! Most for sale feature label version 3 and have the smooth sleeve - the first pressing sleeve features a 'pebble' texture.

A common misconception is that a 1Y//1 2Y//1 matrix indicates a first pressing. The majority of Vertigo swirls didn't sell very well first time round! They were therefore quickly deleted. Some were repressed the year after initial issue, and since the mothers/stampers had hardly been used it was simply decided to use them again without going to further expense. So you will find 2nd issue swirls with the 1Y1 2Y1 matrix. Conversely, some 1st pressings feature a 1Y2 matrix - possibly unhappy with the quality of the initial stamper a second one was made...a great example of this on a different label is Led Zeppelin III on Atlantic red/plum; Jimmy Page reviewed 4 test pressings of the album and rejected them all until the 5th one; so Led Zepp III 1st press features A5/B5 matrices....
Also used by Vertigo to identify country of manufacture (since they never bothered to print Made In England/UK on the labels!) was a 3 digit code: on NEARLY ALL UK pressings you will find 420 as part of the matrix: eg 6360 011 1Y//1 420 1 1 3 - but just occasionally some UK pressings (particularly some from 1969 and 1970) omitted this number.
Use this in conjunction with the unlaminated gatefold sleeve (except where detailed), plus the label design variations and you can rest assured you are buying the 1st press UK Vertigo Swirl you thought you were!
All information contained within these guides is from a number of sources; mainly my own extensive collection, rarerecordcollector dot com and vertigo swirl dot com - on this website you will find detailed information on other countries pressings (some of the 'missing' UK catalogue numbers were assigned to releases in other countries only), as well as their specific label design.
