I travel a lot, which means I'm a pro at packing! I’m a big fan of being 'over' prepared and always pack with the thought of, 'you never know what could happen'. My same packing rules apply whether I’m travelling solo or with my toddler! For tips and tricks on packing the perfect carry-on bag, follow along below. If you're travelling with kids, reference my ' Tips for Travelling with Kids' guide!
Think About Bag Style
Pick a large enough bag that can fit all of your carry-on goodies. To stay organised, divide up your belongings and pack smaller bags inside of your large bag (try and stop yourself from throwing your lip gloss, pens and lose items in your carry-on). Dedicate a space for your beauty products, pens, electronics and snacks. If you're travelling with little ones and need to be hands free, go with a backpack style. That way you can place it on your back and keep your hands free for picking up kids, holding passports, or helping to carry other stuff.
There's nothing worse than being uncomfortable on a freezing cold plane! I always travel with an oversized scarf (it can double as a blanket), extra socks and a light jumper! If you're running out of room in your bag and it's too warm to wear your scarf, add a bit of style to your bag and tie it on the strap!
Bring Your Beauty Products
Do not check in your make-up and cosmetics! This will save you when you make it to your destination and your checked bags don't! If your beauty products are larger than 3oz, check those and carry on the essentials. My carry-on essentials are a travel size moisturiser (planes have the driest air!), lip balm, toothbrush/paste, face wipes, hand sanitiser and a refreshing face moisturiser! For extra zing use a moisturiser that has a hint of citrus or peppermint in it.
If you're travelling on a red eye or international flight, pack extra undies and a shirt. Carrying on these simple items will make it easy to freshen up when you land (you'll have your cosmetic bag too)! To stay connected, travel with an extra battery pack! I love these solar powered portable battery chargers! If there's sunlight, there's power!
Keep Yourself Busy
If I'm scheduled on a long flight, I always pack a magazine, a good book (or kindle read), travel size paints and a journal! I love these pocket size watercolour sets by Koi. They are super compact and fit nicely in a handbag or carry-on bag. Most of my inspiration and creative ideas come when I travel or am zoned out on a plane! It's always good to be prepared!
BYOB - Bring Your Own Bottle
Staying hydrated is a must while travelling! Now most airport security don't allow liquids (and the cost of bottled water is outrageous) I bring my own bottle. There are always water bottle filling stations or water fountains placed throughout the terminals. If hot tea or coffee is your thing, get an insulated bottle that does double duty and keeps drinks hot and cold for up to 12 hours plus!
Snacks Are Essential
Save your cash and pack the snacks before you hit the airport! A great snack pack includes a piece of fruit, trail mix and crackers. For an eco-friendly option, pack those snacks in reusable snack bags! If I'm running late or don't have time, I usually grab a healthy protein bar or snack on granola.
