Having a fully-fledged superpower, or in the case of billionaire genius Tony Stark a basement full of your own super-powered technology, gives Marvel’s Avengers quite the advantage over mere mortals existing in the world around them.

With that in mind, folks living in the Marvel Universe can consider themselves fortunate that The Hulk, Iron Man and Hawkeye chose to use their respective super-perks for good rather than tread the path of evil.

However, just because our superhero pals achieve feats like crushing a car with one smash of a giant fist doesn’t make them invulnerable or impervious to injury. Supervillains are adapt at exposing the chinks in Iron Man’s armour, or The Hulk’s tendency for destructive mood swings or Hawkeye’s penchant for getting into the odd fight.

These Avengers may be tough guys, but they still have weak spots. Here’s a guide for all you budding evildoers on taking down three of Marvel’s finest heroes.

The Hulk

Origin: Everyone knows Bruce Banner’s deal by now, right? "Caught in the blast of gamma radiation, brilliant scientist Bruce Banner is cursed to transform in times of stress into the living engine of destruction known as The Incredible Hulk!

Strengths: It was a tough break for the founding Avenger, but an even harsher twist of fate for anyone who’s had the misfortune to get on his nerves down the years. Hulk has Planet Destroyer status in the Marvel Universe and his incredible feats of strength include holding up a 150 billion ton mountain and preventing a planet ripping apart by holding the tectonic plates together.

He can jump miles at a time and is practically impervious to attacks. Even if you do manage to tag him, he can heal at superhuman speed.

Weaknesses: The angrier you make hulk, the stronger he gets, the more destruction he causes and the less inclined he is to show any remorse. You see the problem here? The only folks who really stand a chance are those of equal or greater strength.

The Mighty Thor is one of those folks. He once earned a victory against The Hulk by firing a lightning bolt to the back of his head, while he wasn’t looking, knocking him out cold.

The Silver Surfer has also defeated Hulk by literally removing the gamma radiation from his body using his cosmic power, turning him back into Bruce Banner. If you can calm Hulk down he’s easy-pickings.

Iron Man

Origin: Famed industrialist, inventor, genius and international playboy Tony Stark runs into trouble when all round nasty piece of work Wong-Chu uses a booby trap to capture him, injuring him severely in the process. The shrapnel close to his heart is kept at bay only by a magnetic chest plate.

Instead of the weapons he’s been instructed to construct, he builds an iron suit and plots his escape.

Strengths: With Stark back in his lab, the Iron Man suit undergoes a few improvements and gets a fancy red and gold paint job. The rocket-powered suit allows Stark to fly at Mach 3 speeds and gives him superhuman strength. It’s also weaponised.

He can fire repulsor rays from his palms and chest. He also has a genius-level intellect and he’s an incredible scientist and engineer.

Weaknesses: Beneath that super-suit, Tony “Iron Man” Stark is one of the most vulnerable superheroes out there. He has a weakness for the ladies, his ego is out of control and, just between us, he has a little bit of a drinking problem.

You could say he’s his own worst enemy. Beyond his own demons, he’s also got a weak heart as a result of his injuries. He also doesn’t do a very good job of protecting his technology from those wishing to use it against him.

He’s also stubborn as a mule and his convictions end up annoying his mates. One time him and a group known as The Illuminati resolved to banish Hulk from Earth. Hulk returned to whoop him despite wearing a special ‘Hulkbuster’ suit. Stark Tower was destroyed in the process.

Hawkeye

Origin: Clint Barton ran away from his orphanage to join the carnival, where he became the master archer and star attraction “ Hawkeye.” He was inspired by Iron Man to become a superhero, but his early endeavours didn’t go well.

Eventually he was able to win the trust of the Avengers and earn his spot on the team.

Strengths: Hawkeye doesn’t haven any superpowers per se (although in his Goliath persona he used special glasses to grow to great heights and achieve super strength), he’s just a straight up badass.

He’s not only the greatest archer ever known with an array of trick arrows in his arsenal, he’s in peak physical condition, is an awesome acrobat, is an experienced motorcycle rider, has supreme strength and can turn almost any object into a weapon. Oh, and he has received extensive combat, marshal arts and tactical training from none other than Captain America. Not bad.

Weaknesses: Hawkeye is brash, arrogant, has a bad temper and left the Avengers at one point when his ego led him to believe he wasn’t wanted. He also has a bit of a complex about his lack of superpowers Hawkeye is killable and, like most folks in the Marvel universe has actually before. He laid down his life to thwart a Kree invasion, but returned in an alternate reality.
