Best way to spot a counterfeit is to know the original!
In this quick and easy to follow guide you will get to know what points make your GHDs stand out from the many dangerous substandard fakes on the market. If they differ from any of the following points then unfortunately you have a counterfeit product. GHD use hologram numbers along with a date code to verify on their website. This is not a definitive way to check as the latest counterfeits are using the very same numbers. This guide is a definitive guide which physically checks your GHDs which is the only way to have a definite answer.

Check 1.
POWER CABLE
  • The power cable should be salon length 2.8m.
  • The cable should be flat to the touch, not round.
Note: Cables are a common fault so may have been replaced at some stage. Therefore this check may not be definitive on its own if checking second hand or old GHDs.

Check 2.
HINGE PIN
  • Remove the two round hinge cover caps displaying the GHD logo - use a small flat blade screwdriver to simply pop them off.
  • You should see a cross head screw visible on BOTH sides.
  • The barrel of the pin is brass.
This is one of the best ways to check if your GHDs are genuine. Counterfeits are not yet reported to have replicated this pin.

Check 3.
SCREWS
  • The screws used on the inner arms and the cable clamp should be the domed type - rounded top, not flat.
  • They should also be cross headed and not covered by any stickers or hologram labels.
Another quick and easy way to check if genuine. Counterfeits nearly all use flat type cross headed screws.

Check 4.
INTERNAL PCBs
  • Once the hinge pin has been removed (undo cross head screw and push out) you can undo the screws on the inner arms. This reveals the PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards).
  • There should be screw connections to the PCBs, not soldered.
  • The PCBs should look the same layout as pictured. Any difference reveals you have a counterfeit.
This is the final check and checks the actual workings. If  yours look like the original pictured then you have a                                                                                                         definitive answer - they are genuine GHDs! The pcbs are the expensive part of the GHDs and all counterfeits vary from the original. You will notice there are many components on the genuine article, counterfeits have a lot less.

When buying GHDs ensure that the seller can verify the above checks. It is easy for them to provide a photo displaying the cable, screws and hinge pin. If you use this guide post purchase and decide to check the points for yourself, be careful not to have the GHDs plugged into the mains supply when exposing PCBs.
