I REGULARLY SEE ON EBAYS LISTINGS DIFFERENT METHODS OF TWEAKING TO IMPROVE THE SONIC PERFORMANCE OF TURNTABLES AND ITEMS FOR SALE WITH THIS PURPOSE IN MIND.  ONE OF THE STRANGEST GADGETS I HAVE SEEN ARE RUBBER RINGS THAT STRETCH AROUND THE TURNTABLE PLATTER IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEADEN UNWANTED VIBRATION AND RINGING WITHIN THE PLATTER.  FIRSTLY MAY I SAY THAT IF A PLATTER RINGS IT WAS INTENDED TO DO SO.  THERE ARE TWO PROVEN METHODS OF DEALING WITH UNWANTED VIBRATION AND RESONANCE.  ONE IS TO KILL IT COMPLETELY BY USING INHERT MATERIALS SUCH AS MDF, TUFNELL, CHIPBOARD AND OTHER DENSE NON-RESONANT MATERIALS.  AN EASY EXAMPLE APPLIED TO MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS I WOULD CALL THIS METHOD THE FENDER STRATOCASTER APPROACH.  THE OTHER METHOD IS TO CHANNEL THE VIBRATIONS AND RESONANCE AROUND THE UNIT AND INCOMPASS IT IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THE UNIT.  IN OTHER WORDS ALLOW IT TO RING LIKE A BELL.  I CALL THIS THE GIBSON LES PAUL APPROACH WHERE YOU ARE ALLOWING THE UNIT TO RESONATE TO CREATE THE FINISHED SOUND AND IN THE CASE OF THE LES PAUL ADDING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF SUSTAIN.  IN MY OPINION TURNTABLES LIKE THE THORENS, LINN AND OTHER METAL PLATTERED TURNTABLES SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO FOLLOW THIS APPROACH AND NOT DEADENED BY ANY RUBBER DAMPENING RINGS THAT WOULD CERTAINLY SERVE TO DISTRACT FROM WHAT THE PRODUCT WAS DESIGNED TO ACHIEVE.  SO IF YOUR TURNTABLE RINGS LIKE A BELL LET IT RING.  AND IF YOU FOLLOW THE OTHER APPROACH WHERE YOU PURCHASE A TURNTABLE THATS INHERT AND DEAD I.E. C J WALKERS, REGAS, REVOLVERS AND THE LIKE, LETS FACE IT YOU WONT WANT TO TURN YOUR LINN INTO ONE OF THESE TURNTABLES WOULD YOU?
