No matter how well you’ve prepared for the upcoming holiday season, it always seems that the need for another gift arises. Perhaps it’s for a colleague you didn’t think would give you something or a guest who shows up with a present in hand or someone you accidentally left off your shopping list. (We’ve all been there!)

Whatever the case may be, it can be terribly awkward to find yourself on the receiving end of a gift when you’re empty handed. The holidays are stressful enough without the added worry that you made a social faux pas! Fortunately, keeping a few last-minute Christmas gifts on hand will help you navigate holiday gift giving with ease.

Below, you’ll find five pairings of presents. I’ve found that combining two items that coordinate with each other makes the gift feel more thoughtful. Store these in a plastic bin in your closet so they stay dust-free, and keep a stack of gift bags and ribbon nearby.

Tea Towels + Olive Oil

Pretty  tea towels are something that everyone appreciates, but not everyone is willing to splurge on. They also have the added bonus of being an item that will actually be used throughout the year. Bundle a couple of towels together with a nice bottle of olive oil and you have the perfect gift for a cook or foodie. (If you can find an olive oil with nice packaging, you don’t even need to wrap this. A ribbon tied around everything will be beautiful on its own.)

Luxury Soap + Dish

There’s no shortage of luxury soaps wrapped in luxurious packaging this time of year! Choose a light scent that will appeal to almost everyone (or a seasonally appropriate pine fragrance) and package it with a unique soap dish. The soap dish might not go with everyone’s décor, but if you keep both a  handmade pottery dish and a vintage glass one on hand, you can pick the dish that is best suited for the recipient.

Taper Candles + Vintage Holders

Like tea towels,  taper candles aren’t something that most people buy for themselves, which makes it perfect for a holiday present. Pick a pair of unscented handmade beeswax tapers and pair them with  vintage candlestick holders. (Pineapple ones are especially popular this year.) Giving a vintage item as a gift is sure to make the recipient feel like you’ve spent hours scouring antique stores to find the perfect set!

Wine + Coasters

A great bottle of wine is a perennial favourite that really doesn’t need an accompaniment to make for a standout gift! However, you can make it even more memorable by giving a set of  coasters along with it. I’m partial to agate coasters, which look like colourful works of art perched on a coffee table.

Cocktail Napkins + Mixology Book

For those who might not appreciate a bottle of wine, give them a mixology gift. A set of embroidered  cocktail napkins will spruce up their bar carts and a  mixology book will ensure that they think of you the next time cocktails are served. Cheers!
