Leg lifters are pieces of equipment that are designed to assist you when you are lifting your legs from a seated position up onto the bed. There are 2 types of leg lifter manual or powered.
Manual leg lifter
This is also sometimes known as ‘dog lead type’ because of its appearance to a dog lead! Sitting on the side of the bed, place your foot into the looped end which is stiffened to make this easier and then you have to physically lift your foot up by holding onto hand hold whilst leaning back on the bed at the same time. It is important that you have good sitting balance and can support your body or there is a danger of overbalancing. This piece of equipment may mean the difference between being able to get in and out of bed by yourself or having to rely on a carer.
Powered leg lifter
Powered leg lifters are a pad which fits to the side of the bed and are powered so that the pad physically lifts your legs and feet from the floor up to a horizontal position so you can then shuffle back onto the bed. It is important that you have good sitting balance and can support your body or there is a danger of overbalancing. Note-Some of the powered leg lifters are quite noisy when in use so you need to consider this.
