MEGADRIVE BOOTLEGS

Like if this guide is helpful

As prices saw and popularity rises, boots have become ever more present, and over the last few years i have noticed these appearing more and more frequently on the net,

Some over priced games such as Eliminate Down (usually vastly over priced from its actual value) have been repro'd (reproduced),

Some other titles to watch out for are that are commonly repro'd are :-
Snow Bros, Megaman, Musha Aleste

Others may appear to be an original from that region, when they were never released there,
titles such as :-
Alien Soldier (genesis, no genesis version was officially released),
Gley Lancer, Undeadline, Panorama Cotton, Eliminate Down, Twinkle Tale,  Snow Bros (all only released in japan, so no european or u.s. version is genuine if found).

below are examples of the sort of stuff that may well be floating around.

Above example is something quite commonly found on boots, where the bootlegger has just made a label up using the front cover.
The labels are usually different to the front and manual covers, delibrately done so by the manufacturer to make bootlegging more difficult, some will have very minor differences, writing is usually repositioned if picture appears the same, also may have extra writing or less writing than covers.

The above comix zone and below megaman were recently sold on ebay (sept 2014).
Comix was listed as hong kong version (lol), to my knowledge there is no such version, also hong kong and china are well known for making fakes.
Megaman was listed with the original copy in the listing pics, so not listed in anyway to show you what you would be getting, thus dishonest and delibrate attempt to dupe people into buying the dodgy merchanise.

The examples shown are pretty easy for an experienced buyer to spot, except for the megaman 1 where the seller delibrately tried to decieve the buyer.
Theres a bit of a catch22 with the japanese versions as the easiest way to check for sure is to open up the cart, but in doing so you have to remove/partially remove or pierce the sticker on the back to open it up, in doing so there is a high chance it will end up damaged thus de-valueing the original.
The unreleased in the specific region claimed boot.
some bootlegs availiable are made from games that were released but in a different region, these boots are made to look like an original release but are in fact not original, they will most likely contain the nasty blobbed boot board as above.
OFFICIALLY ONLY RELEASED IN THE U.S. (this copy is actually quite good in quality print wise).

The above copy is apparently from an unofficial company in japan that specialises in releasing the unreleased in that region,

Below Gleylancer and Splatterhouse 3 were listed as taiwan versions, also being sold as such were musha aleste, snow bros, eliminate down, rockman, and divine sealing (which was an unofficial release (bootleg) when 1st sold)

As this may be last time i update this guide, its probably worth mentioning the following in the hope that it may be of some help.

new and sealed as far as japanese titles go are highly unlikely to make it on to ebay, chances are they are reproduction copies, if they were availiable they would be snapped up by the japanese for amounts way beyond that of the top end 2nd hand,

u.s. n europe are likely to be original and availiable, with the rare and valuable mainly the likely 1s to be repro'd (have not seen any myself, though have seen 2nd hand (not sealed) bootlegs of rockman and alien soldier.

no official titles were ever released to my knowledge as :- hong kong or taiwan,
there were :- japanese, asian, and korean only, asian being the one sold everywhere else in asia other than japan and korea.

The region locks although a pain, can be a way of telling if you have a genuine title or not, if you buy a region locked game and find it runs on a system not from that region then its a bootleg, so although a pain they save you from having to open the cart to make sure.
