Manuka Honey ScamWhenever there is a premium product - there is a scam to follow.
What is Manuka Honey
Manuka Honey is a premium active honey product that people believe offers health benefits over nomal honey and research has shown its antibacterial properties can help with a whole host of health issues or at the very least help continue good health. There is a wealth of information on the internet about the product so you can make up your own mind if genuine manuka honey can help you.
I believe Manuka Honey is only produced in New Zeland and as such it is a premium product with a premium price tag. The Honey is graded using UMF - this is the honey's antibacterial strength - the higher the number, the higher the price tag basically.
I have used a teaspoon of Manuka honey in green tea twice a day for years, but my standard 250g jar of 12+ Manuka Honey is over £10 from a local health food shop so it costs a LOT more than your standard honey......
Typical Prices for a 250g Jar of Manuka Honey:
UMF5 = £5-£7 UMF10 = £9-£12 UMF16-20 = £20-£30
Whats the Scam ?Scam 1 - its not Manuka Honey at all - There are lots of fake Manuka Honey products out there where the honey is standard set honey. The scammer removes the normal label from the standard Honey and replaces them with fake Manuka Honey labels which look identical to the real deal. A Huge markup on a 500g supermarket jar of honey !!!
These are usually pretty easy to spot if you are used to Manuka Honey as it does have a slightly different taste and texture to normal set honey.
Scam 2 - what is the real UMF ? Obvious scam here - scammer buys in Manuka Honey with a UMF of 5 or even "ungraded" Manuka Honey and re-labels as UMF 20 then charges 4 times as much for it. How can you tell the difference ? Well without a laboratory you probably can't !
The only way to buy genuine UMF graded Manuka Honey is to buy it from a reputable dealer online or from a health food store. Otherwise you could well be buying normal table honey at 5 times the supermarket price.
If a price seems too good to be true.... it probably is !
