New computer motherboard

I recently bought a new motherboard from E-bay due to the old one having died on us. The new motherboard is absolutely fine and works a treat, but, our old copy of Windows XP will not register on it. We rang Microsoft and got told that replacing a motherboard renders the machine into a new computer and our registered copy of XP, (same machine otherwise) is no longer valid. They said that if we tried, it would lock up after 30 days and it would no longer be fully operable until we bought a new copy of XP! We were spitting! Anyway we have installed Windows 2000 with no probs, but be warned that there may be extra expense to a new motherboard. Or you could just go for the Linux option!
