Christmas presents for him

On a budget **
When it comes to buying Christmas presents for men, you can’t go wrong with a good book or DVD box set. Either go for a TV series he hasn’t seen yet – Homeland, 24 and the Walking Dead are all big sellers at the moment – or something that’ll bear repeated viewing.

It’s a rare man who doesn’t wear T-shirts, and cult brand YMC makes some of the best. They’re well cut and fashionable without being slavish to trends. Their clothes are simple and wearable, and will go with pretty much anything.

Splurge ****

Again there’s no reason you can’t go for a DVD box set. Downton Abbey is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, or if she’d prefer a comedy, you can't go wrong with Friends - how about a complete Friends box set.

Alternatively, skincare is something she’s guaranteed to use. Look for cult beauty brands like Bliss or Nip + Fab, the company behind this 10 Years Younger set, which comes in at a bargain price.

A girl can never have too many scented candles, and Diptyque’s are still the loveliest. The brand's Baies candles are brand new from Liberty and is the store’s bestselling fragrance. ‘I burned these at my wedding and have one in almost every room at home,’ says Liberty’s beauty buyer, Sarah Coonan.

Splurge ****
If in doubt, buy cashmere. No one can have too many cashmere socks, jumpers or scarves. Brands like The White Company sell quality pashminas that will keep her cosy through the coldest months.

Simply buy one of these wicker baskets (they come in small, medium or large, depending on your budget) and fill them with luxury teas, jams, chutneys, biscuits, or whatever else she likes to eat.
