You may know them as the Bronte sisters, but to people at the time were the Bell brothers. Anne, Charlotte and Emily published as Acton, Currier and Ellis respectively. The daughters of a clergyman living in West Yorkshire, the other sibling being called Branwell. There was another sister Maria who never survived childhood-nor did Anne in fact but she did write books before that. Charlotte lived the longest, at a mere 38, died in childbirth.

Their stories are probably the introduction to popular culture of suspense. And Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights inspired the Kate Bush song...no, it's gone...
