All The First Generation Sets Were Produced By 'Wizard of the Coast'

Base Set - The first Trading Card Set Produced For Pokemon - What I mean by this is that they are not the first cards to be produce for and by Pokemon but rather the first card set that was made for the Trading Card Game. There are many card sets made before this such as Top Sun, Bandai/Carddass etc.

This Guide will inform you on details about Pokemon - Base Set released in Japan on October 20th 1996 and in English on January 9th 1999.

Base Set

The Base Set, released on January 9, 1999 in the United States, is the 1st set of 102 cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the only one so far not to have a set logo or symbol (with the exception of the error "no symbol" Jungle set cards). It is one of few sets to include Fighting, Fire, Grass, Lightning, Psychic and Water Energy cards, now commonly known as basic Energy cards. The set also contained Double Colorless Energy, the first Special Energy card. The set is one of the more well-rounded sets available, with a mixed amount of Pokémon of all types, and includes only Pokémon from the original 150. Some of the more popular examples are Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and Pikachu. The set's four main theme decks were based on four different strategies (offensive, defensive, tactic and speed). This set also had a 2-player starter set, containing two half-sized decks with no intended strategy.

The "1st issue" print and a few of the following ("2nd issue") prints have a slightly different design than the standard "unlimited" ("3rd issue") prints. These early prints are generally brighter in color, use a thinner font, have the year 1999 appear twice in the copyright notice and lack the shadow around the pictures. Because of this, these cards are known as "shadowless" cards among collectors. Since not many prints were printed as "shadowless", these cards are rarer than the "unlimited" print. Cards printed right before the release of Base Set 2 have the year 2000 included in their copyright notices. These cards are known as "4th issue" cards, and are also rarer than the "unlimited" print. Certain "4th issue" cards have slightly brighter color than the other prints.

2-Player Starter Set Deck

The 2-Player Starter Set is a special beginners deck from the Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The 2-Player Starter Set includes 61 cards unlike the Theme Decks released alongside Base Set, which include 60. As the 2-Player Starter Set is designed to introduce players to the TCG, the cards are split into two 30-card decks: The First Deck, which focuses on Fighting Pokémon, and The Second Deck, which focuses on Fire Pokémon. As the only Stage 2 Pokémon in the set, the additional Machamp card is included to bolster the deck. The 2-Player Starter Set also includes a starter rules sheet, rulebook, damage counters, and card list. The set does not include a coin, though none of the Pokémon found in the set require one for any of their attacks.
The Machamp card is exclusive to the 2-Player Starter Set, and cannot be found in Base Set booster packs. This card was only printed commercially as a 1st Edition card, with the only non-1st Edition versions included in the Trainer Deck A.
