The Above photos are of a genuine Mk IX Compass

The Mk IX compass was produced by several manufactures in Britain as well as Australia. They were manufactured up to the early 1940's. A genuine MkIX is worth up to £250, depending on condition.
A reproduction is worth less than £20.

The reproductions are easy to detect.
1) They all are supposed to have been made by F. Barker and Sons.
2) They do not have the unique 'crank' in the prism guard, which the genuine compass has.
3) The thumb ring on the reproduction has two parallel sides whereas the genuine thumb ring forms part of a perfect circle.
4) They all have the same serial number:- B13066.
5) The markings on the base of the genuine compass are neatly impressed whereas the markings on the reproduction are poorly engraved with misaligned lettering.
So be on your guard, save your money and buy wisely.
