The art of good tile cutting lies in a quality tile cutter such as Rubi or Sigma, the correct scoring wheel plus the skill and knowledge to use the tile cutter correctly.
For the tiling novice it is vital to practice using the tile cutter at hand on old or spare tiles to get used to the manual action of the tile cutter plus the importance of the first score.
The importance of a good score line is essential when cutting any type of tile. The correct pressure should be a firm, continuous motion as repeat scoring will cause multiple fracture lines and a jagged break.
Excessive pressure when scoring will create internal cracks and cause the tile to shatter when the break-bar is depressed.
One pass with the scoring wheel is the ideal, but take a second if the tile doesn't snap readily under light pressure.
Tungsten carbide scoring wheels and titanium scoring wheels will eventually dull from repeated use. Replacing the scoring wheel should restore the cutter to its original performance.
See below the guidelines for the different sizes of replacement scoring wheels.
Rubi Replacement Wheels
01945 - 6mm replacement scoring wheel is for use with models TS, TS-PLUS, TF, TR, TR-S, Speed, Rapid, Star & Pocket tile cutters. Ideal for regular tiles (ceramics). They are made with Tungsten Carbide for maximum precision, durability and resistance to wear.

Differences When Breaking Different Tile Types
Ceramic tiles are the easiest to work with because they can withstand a lot of compression but they can break easily when bent.
Relatively thin clay tiles are the easiest to score and snap but as clay tiles get thicker they become more difficult to break cleanly.
Porcelain tiles are more challenging to cut because they contain crystallized silica which can cause them to break in a conchoidal fractur, not following any natural planes of separation
Always ensure you have the correct specification tile cutter for the type of tiles you wish to cut.
